Bon Fire (September 30, Bellarmine Field)

It was a pretty stressful day but very fulfilling nonetheless! I was already stressing out because I was running late for my 430pm interview with Jessica Soho, who was waiting for me at Moro Lorenzo. It was my first time to meet her. She is a very warm lady and asked intelligent questions. Immediately after the interview, I had to make sure that my Chinky Chickens was already being setup in the soaking and muddy Bellarmine field. Then, I arrived just in time for the mass at 6pm. Because we were seated in front, I didn't notice how the crowd was already starting to pile up. After the mass, Alingal Hall served as our safe haven allowing us to relax a bit and eat peacefully before storming out to the field. I was amazed to see the number of people who attended the grand event despite the weather, traffic and muddy conditions. Here are some of the highlights of the night, for me:

- I was given a citation to possibly be inducted into the Ateneo Hall of Fame. But, l'll still have to wait 20 years from now. I'll be 43 by then and with much less hair.

- I was shocked to see U.S. Ambassador Kenney, who normally prefers to remain very diplomatic regarding her choice of team. I guess she, too, believes that there is much reason to celebrate and that there is no need to hide her true feelings :) Moreover, she proudly wore the blue Ateneo jacket which Kirk and I handed to her a couple of weeks ago, and she even acknowledged that it was given to her by a "friend". I was touched.

- I was given the honor, together with co-captains Yuri and Nonoy, to light up the grand Bon Fire.

- We hardly realized it but we were signing and taking pictures for about 4 and a half hours. We ended at 230.

- I was informed that electricity kept fluctuating in the Chinky Chickens tent, which caused a shortage in production. Furthermore, we ran out of rice and styros at one point because they apparently lent hundreds to the nearby stall who didn't return them immediately. More stress!

- I signed my name on this guy's brief. Afterwards, he told me he had just won P1000 from a dare. He seemed to be a straight guy. Hilarious!

- It was 1:30 am, and it started to rain again. I stood up and saw the line, still about 50 meters. People were holding up their umbrellas. At 2:15 am, it was still raining, and still people were lining up with their umbrellas.

- I don't know exactly how long the waiting time is for those queuing. Coach Sandy overhears two people who had just come out of the tent saying: "Sulit na sulit ang hintay natin!" (It was all worth the wait.)

Those words said it all. Our efforts in signing and smiling were all worth it too even if we were extremely tired. In fact, I started getting all energetic again after midnight, maybe because I saw how we were able to put little smiles on their faces just by posing with them, signing posters, t-shirts and even body parts! We really appreciate everybody who came and supported the team all the way! It is really because of you people that move us to keep going and going until we can finally soar like an eagle.

My messed up self and the owner of the photos :)

congrats for the success of the bonfire! based on your entry, it really looks like fun. i wish that i was there so i can see you personally.

as for the ateneo hall of fame thing, i don't think it will reach 20 years for you to be included. :) and i reaaly think that even though you will be old and have less hair that time, you'll still be good-looking. hehe :D

more power to ATENEO and you CHRIS!!!

it was really tiring for you guys but if i'm in the bon fire too, i will be super lucky like all the people who attended. you deserve to be inducted in the Ateneo Hall of Fame being a good student and athlete.

I had the nicest feet that night...it was all brown. Thanks for signing my muddy "villanueva" jersey. (hahah..sorry about that, it's just that I didn't have anything else. Good for me, I had the two champion teams sign up that shirt. :)

Congratulations for a successful Bonfire despite the rains and all the mud! Phew!

I was at the Ateneo as early as 9am because I still had to submit some paper works. And after I had all the job done, I intently didn't leave because I knew that anytime people would start to pile up, and I was right! Good thing I waited patiently. And thanks to my bessies for keeping me company.ü

Somehow I felt sorry and guilty for my sis (patty:). I promised her that we'd be going to the Bonfire together but then I wasn't able to wait for her (btw, she's a senior HS student from St. Scho and aims to study at the Ateneo as well for college) Then, an untoward incident occurred. Our grandma was rushed to the hospital just hours before the Bonfire started and sis wasn't allowed to attend it anymore. Aww. But she's just so nice that she didn't really blame me and though she was upset she just brushed it off with a smile. She knew she had to be at the hospital with our relatives. She's just so optimistic (Yeah, I'm building her up to you. Haha!) But as for me, I was just so eager to party with you guys (Haha! I'm so stubborn) Good thing our grandma's well now.ü

I wasn't really able to see if those pieces of wood that you burned really had the names of the archers written on them. Because we were still busy eating when they announced that the Bonfire would be lit up and so when we went out to the Bell Field there were already too many people that we barely had a glimpse of the lighting ceremony. Ugh! That's the dumb reason why I can't even answer the questions of my sis and my other friends who didn't make it to the Bonfire as well. Though I already saw a few pics from the i-net, I still don't wanna settle just with those. So for the record, Chris, can you put an end to all these rumors and clarify things? Because IF these were true and was done for jokes sake, hey, it's not good anymore. Even if I am a true blue Atenean, I do have friends and relatives from La Salle and I bet they and the other students and alumni wouldn't really like that. We have already proven that we are the better and the stronger team this season, and I think that's enough. Most of us call them sore losers but IF this issue is true, then more like WE are the sore losers. Ouch, I just feel bad. Though I'd still be waiting for your clarifications on the matter :\

Thanks for the autographs and the cute-as-always smile of yours! I don't know if you'll be able to remember me, but I was the one wearing the striped blue and white shirt with the blushy cheeks and blond hair who was one of the first in line :D

Will watch the show of Jessica Soho tomorrow as well as Pinoy Records and of course Ripley's on Monday.ü

Thanks for another wonderful entry, Chris! I found this one funny and touching at the same time though your previous entry regarding the championship was the one who really made me cry. All of a sudden I get so emotional when I realize you'll not be back next season as a player :'( Though I am hopeful that I'd still get to see you often around campus (maybe you've seen me a couple of times already as I have had this habit of following you when I get to see you. NO, I'm not a stalker. Just another fangirl of yours who's too shy to even shake your hand :D) and probably next year at the Big Dome. I'd definitely wanna see a spectator Chris :))

Continue soaring high as ever!ü

congraTIUlations chris for the success of BONFIRE!
funny how it seems when the GUY let you signed his brief..hahahaha,amazing!so how did you react with that??

Anonymous said...

dear Mr. Tiu,

what's with the "DLSU players' names on the wood" thing all about? is that the attitude of THE ATENEANS when you win the championship? A LOT of La Sallians look up to you. Please do something about it. Ateneans are just degrading themselves for acting that way. Poor thing.

Hi Chris..
I would like to say thank you again..for the wonderful picture and autograph.. I really love it..haha..All the waiting that we experienced was all worth it.. especially when I saw your smile.. hOpe to see you again..:)

my best friend told me u asked if u guys could use their classroom this aft---and ateneans actually rushed to have stuff signed---and she asked for an autograph this time! hahaha! but she still thinks i had the best shirt to have signed. ;p

it ended 230AM i heard. my friends and i went back to bellarmine and the queue was still long---tht was past midnight already! im sure they were all happy to line up despite the rain. were lucky it didnt rain during the bonfire celeb itself like in 2002. ;)

bonfire was great except for one thing. i heard that part of the program was that they burned a green shirt or something like that? THATS JUST FOUL. whoever thought of that should be ashamed of him/herself. that is NOT WHAT AN ATENEAN IS SUPPOSED TO BE. i just thought ateneo would be better than this [im saying this not to the whole ateneo community but the person who thought of this and everyone else who approved to have this done during the bonfire---u can do these things privately although i still think tis a waste of wood/good shirts]. :(

King Eagle once eyed La Salle

By Beth Celis
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 04:39:00 09/29/2008

MANILA, Philippines—About 6 years ago, a tall, gangling youth barely in his teens, stepped into the sports office of La Salle’s high school department.

He was accompanied by his mother who told the staff there that the boy was last enrolled at Philippine Christian University, but would like to transfer that school year to La Salle.

The mother said her son showed good promise as a basketball player and in all likelihood may follow the footsteps of his older brother who played varsity ball also at the De La Salle University. She said she brought his report card so he could take whatever entrance examination was necessary to get into the school.

The staff gave the boy one swift look then escorted the pair to the principal’s office.

* * *

The mother handed the report card to the school official a bit shyly.

The principal examined the contents, then gave it back to the mother. He said the boy’s grades were too low, he cannot even qualify to take the entrance exams.

Mother and son left the school totally downhearted. The boy was unheard of for a long time.

Some years later, however, the boy would resurface in the UAAP wearing a blue uniform. By this time he had metamorphosed into an adult with rippling muscles and hairy legs. He had also grown in height and weight.

But a La Salle staff member recognized him as the boy who wanted to play for the school many years ago.

He now wonders if his school’s destiny would have been reversed, for this season at least, if the once gangling youth was accepted into the academe.

Highly instrumental in leading his team to the UAAP title this season, the boy, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, was voted most valuable player of the league.

Hi Chris, congrats. :) I think I've said this to you personally during the UH feature in the Blue Eagle Gym. :P

So, how does it feel to sign that brief? Must've been really awkward "am-I-going-to-do-this-but-heck-looks-like-fun" at some point, haha. :)

Anyway, since you lighted the bonfire, what do you say about the names of the La Salle players (as well as the green shirt), the three blind mice, and all the other teams written on the firewood?

Ekat said...

I wish I can have a picture with you soon..

psixteen said...

to chris,

i personally was not blaming u guys for that. i was just disappointed to learn something like that occurred...worst, without ur knowledge of it.

taken from my previous comment:
whoever thought of that should be ashamed of him/herself. that is NOT WHAT AN ATENEAN IS SUPPOSED TO BE.

according to charles, twas the idea of some alumni. i think they should be reprimanded for that. twas really below the belt. these are things that make me lose interest sometimes in college bball---the trash talking and stupid stuff like this.

i dunno. tis just frustrating to learn they did that. to think, everyone was having a blast at the bonfire despite the disgusting mud.

again chris, no one was blaming u or the blue eagle team. u guys just got dragged into this ish cos u and yuri were the ones who lighted the bonfire.

good luck w finals!

i have visited Charles' multiply site and i have read his blog regarding the Bonfire issue :) and i have to say i am a bit happy because i was right that you and the other Eagles as well as the administration of the Ateneo had nothing to do with the names of the archers etc. written on the pieces of wood that were burned ;) i was sure that you just wouldn't do such a thing. and to whoever did it (they say 'twas an alumnus), shame on you. now all the Ateneans are being blamed and generalized because of what happened :|
to those who blame the whole Atenean community regarding what transpired during the Bonfire celebration, please know the facts first before you comment and say nasty things against the Ateneo or even its administration, the Eagles, and the kind of education the school offers. a flaw of one person doesn't necessarily become a flaw of all the people who belong to the same community as he/she does. i know there's no excuse for whoever did the name-writing, but please don't point fingers to us all like what Chris said. for the record, the BLUE EAGLES had nothing to do with the incident. if you all want more clarifications, then i suggest you visit Charles' multiply site (the link's posted here by Chris himself) :)
sorry about all this, Chris. i definitely was not the one who did that stupid thing, but i apologize to you on his/her behalf. i know much as you do not want this issue to affect you, you're annoyed and pissed off somehow :| but let's just all forget it and move forward! :D we still are CHAMPS and no one can ever take that from us :))
aww.. Charles already left for Austria right? sad. your brother-supporter is far away from you now :( but don't worry, i can be your defender and sister-supporter even if i know you don't need one anymore :D and he's another testament to the wit and excellence that the Tiu's possess :) after you, he's now another Tiu who's part of the JTA program and he made us all very proud just as we were when you went to France :) kudos to him and to your family! :D
i'm excited to watch another episode of Pinoy Records later! :) and oh the Jessica Soho show. yipee! see ya there! :))
take care, Chris. God bless you :)

chris, stop reacting to people's negative comments. they will pin the burning on the players cause it is the easiest and most convenient thing to do. they want to get a reaction from you and you are providing them with one.

great night it was.. i really enjoy even the soaking muddy field :) by the way thanks for the P.S-rainfall thing in your previous blog, i wore rubber shoes instead slippers :)
although i didn't have the chance to let you sign up my shirt, actually it's not because of line, I saw you from a far like your gesturing that you're already tired so i assumed that if we won't line up and just go home it will be much more in favor to you to rest..hahahahhaha well that's what i thought, kung alam ko lang that you get hyper after midnight..i should have not leave!hahaha kidding anyway thank you for the picture :)

Nette said...

first i'd like to comment sa comment ni kaia..wow..galing ahh!..

secondly to charles blog, very well written about generalization and i must say that charles has given his humble apology for that event.

when i heard about that burning names, i felt frustrated and disappointed.
i was thinking, "nd magagawa ng ateneans yan"..

I just want to imply that generalization is a part of our lives. we are more prone to generalize the bad than the good. we simply assume that the bad is more potent and contagious.

we do not have to look far to understand it, "the black sheep of the family" a figurative example, it causes sorrow in a family, and affects the family as a whole!

but we have to remember that there's such an "individuality". each person is an end per se.

in either way, one member has to come out with courage, strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble..and its in the spirit of "mr.charles tiu" regarding this matter.
Godspeed!

Anonymous said...

Just don't mind them Chris...Its really hard to change how SOME lasallite would think of SOME atenean and vice-versa. We are humans, we commit mistakes and thus we are expected to forgive. After all, it is not important how people will look at us as long as we present to God the person he wanted us to be. God knows what really happened!Chill out!

I just wish you would leave a message on my multiply site(if it's possible)*sigh

Take care always

I'm glad you spoke up, Chris. I knew you guys wouldn't be in on that.

For the record (and information of those following this post), the wood was the work of one Ateneo alumnus. ONE. This person has since apologized in writing to Fr. Nebres, who has forwarded said apology to Fr. Armin of La Salle.

I hope that helps lay this matter to rest. Honestly, I thought it was such a small thing and certainly not anywhere near the public gloating La Salle has subjected us to in the past, not that I'm keeping score. However, if anyone wishes to whine some more about it, I would be happy to engage them in a discussion about group ethics (thank you, Fr. Nemy Que!) and the logical fallacy of hasty generalization.

Anonymous said...

To everyone who's blaming Chris and/or the rest of the Blue Eagles for that Bonfire incident..how close minded can you guys get? do you seriously think that our players are capable of doing such act? I mean, come on, you've seen how they act in games or on the court. They've showcased their decent behavior all throughout the season --- they didn't do that "bang bang" move, they didn't stick out their middle finger and they weren't the ones who didn't show sportsmanship after losing a game. So how can you guys believe or even have the impression that they did this? THE PLAYERS DON'T DESERVE THIS --- AFTER ALL THE HARDWORK & SACRIFICES THEY DID FOR THE TEAM AND AFTER GIVING SO MUCH GLORY AND HONOR TO ATENEO.

So to the BLUE EAGLES and especially YOU--CHRIS, thank you once again for bringing back the pride to our school. It's very unfortunate that some people choose to dwell on the bonfire incident rather than the fact that we won the championship. Sorry for that. Just want you to know that the true-blue Ateneans are behind your back.

BTW, HERE'S THE LETTER OF THE GUY WHO'S BEHIND THE BONFIRE INCIDENT.

3 October 2008

Fr. Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ
President
Ateneo de Manila University

Dear Fr. Nebres,

I write this letter for two reasons. The first one is to own up to producing the materials with the names of the Green Archers and placing them prominently in the woodpile before the bonfire for all to see.

Secondly, I sincerely apologize to you for the queasy situation you are in as a result of the backlash it created.

While the nature of this letter is a personal apology to you, please feel free to extend it to parties you may deem fit to receive it.

Sincerely,

Jesse Paredes

about ambassador kenney...

i know she's a blue eagle supporter though everytime the camera's focused on her commentators would say "u.s ambassador enjoying the uaap and supports both admu&dlsu..."since she's always present during dlsu/admu game but she's always seating on the blue side.... hahahaha...

watched jessica soho's show a while ago... wow lng... sobrang i admire you..bihira lng for a guy ung sobrang taas ng spirituality.. u remind me of my friend.. he's so focused sa school, sa organizations, sa family, sa friends/colleagues and of course kay Lord..

regarding the names of the archers on the woods.. i was informed that fr. nebres made an apology.. apparently, he didn't know anything about it.. some were saying that it was the alumni's idea but then again it's just hear-says.. the perpetrator of that, whoever he/she misght be, really disaapointed alot of ateneans..

can u stop pointing fingers and accusing the players/team of having anything to do with the name of the archers in the bonfire wood! they all had no idea!! here read this:

http://charlestiu.multiply.com/journal/item/41/Theres_no_difference_between_GREEN_and_BLUE

- it was me who commented that! haha

will all you la salle people who keep on accusing the players of Ateneo just think? you keep forcing it when the only person who is responsible for this is JESS PAREDES (who offered an apology already!!). No one else knew about it beforehand, no one even saw it during the bonfire. And btw, they lit the bonfire from afar so they didnt see iT!

Thanks be to God the culprit on Names Burning of La Salle players has been discovered and has apologized. The guy, Mr. Paredes, must accept the full wrath of La Salle and of everybody who were/are disgusted with the act.

Now, that we are sure that our players have nothing to do with it let us pray the DLSU groups to stop blaming Chris. If they will continue dragging his name on it they will earn the wrath of his fans coming from all walks of life and from various universities and colleges.

It is unfair for the King Eagle to be treated that way. He had acted with dignity and honor throughout his career. He showed respect and admiration even to his opponents and then they will try to bring him down through the stupidity of one.

To those who are trying to use the Bonfire 'burning' to put down Chris, we say that we will not take this sitting down. You are antagonizing not just the Ateneans but his legions of fans as well.

Kahit magtabla ang score ng ADMU & DLSU sa UAAP panalo pa rin ang Ateneo, kasi Chris has 'POGI' points.

We love our Captain, we love The King Eagle.

Charles - malay ko bang ikaw pala yun e kay "Chris" naka-attribute yung comment :-p

(And I just realized that La Salle does not have a "Fr. Armin," but a "Bro. Armin." Sorry, Lasallites!)

Anyway, I hope that drama ends soon now that the party responsible has owned up to and apologized for his actions. Pag-usapan niyo na lang yung nagpa-autograph ng brief, hehehe.

Thank you so much! For the Game, the Glory and the Suuuuper happy night at the Bonfire. The slipping and sliding in the mud, waiting in the loooooooooooong line and staying under the rain without an umbrella was so worth it! You were so nice pa, even though you seemed tired. You even allowed us to retake a picture with you cause something went wrong the first time and you did it with a resounding "Sure!" Thank you for an unforgettable experience! Haha! Charles, I knew 'twas you who wrote that comment because of all the exclamation points and how the comment itself sounded. Good thing you said so. I doubt that Chris would let himself be affected by such a petty issue.

To those La Sallites and even those Ateneans who have said their piece about the issue, what can you all say now? Aren't you ashamed of yourselves after what you said? Pity all of you.

Can we all just forget what occurred during the Bonfire and just be happy? After all it's already over. The damage has been done but that alumnus already wrote a letter of apology and we are no perfect people to not accept his sorry. As the Lord said, "The one who doesn't have even a single sin should be the one to first cast a stone to his/her brother/sister." ..Let's just all focus on the championship. The players do not deserve all the blaming and pinpointing after all their hard work all throughout the season.

Charles, I have read your blog and what can I say, 'twas very well-written, 'twas awesome. Good job! Oh by the way, good luck on the JTA program. Maybe it's hard for you to be away from home, but just hang on. You're doing us all very proud. And oh, will you be playing for the Ateneo next season? I'd love to watch another Tiu play! ..Take Care!

Chris, I watched S.O.P this afternoon and saw you guys there. I can say you all had fun huh. And on the Jessica Soho show last night, nice nice! I enjoyed it. And I agree with those who said that you wore a cutie shirt. How can we purchase one?

Looking forward for another blog entry from you, Chris. I have been hearing rumors that you and the other Eagles would be playing for a franchise in the PBL? That'd be nice! I miss seeing you all play together. And I know you're still thinking as to whether you'd pursue
your basketball career as a pro. You have all the time in the world to think things over! Haha. Just please do update all of us and somehow please consider us, all your fans and supporters, in your decision-making.

God Bless you! And, I miss saying this, One Big Fight!ü

P.S: I'd be watching Ripley's again tomorrow!

Chris,

You conquered the Philippine media by storm this week. Just this morning:

1. Manila Bulletin devoted two full page just for you and only one page for the Bonfire with the rest of the Ateneo team. Excellent interview.

2. The Philippine Star once again featured you and JV Casio on its cover, but this time in their Sunday Magazine, STARWEEK. Nice photos and article about ADMU-DLSU rivalry inside.

3. In the Entertainment section of Philippine Star there is your interview with Ricky Lo with large pics pa. Great interview... THE CATHOLIC CHURCH PICK YOU AS A POSTER BOY AGAINST PORNOGRAPHY, PRE-MARITAL SEX AND CONTRACEPTIONS. You showed to young people that it is possible to have great fun and to be 'cool' while remaining wholesome.

Napaka gentleman mo naman. You simply remained silent when asked if your gf is affected by your fans adulation, especially the girls. Ms. Clarisse is one lucky girl. May the Lord bless the two of you.

Hello Mr.Tiu,
I,ve been reading your blog for two or three months now..I think. First of all, I would like to say congratulations for winning the championship this year. It must be one of your most memorable events that happened in your life. You must be a man of discipline and intelligence as everyone admires you..especially girls. Also, I agree what Mikels had said about "burning of wood with the archers name written on it is a foul". It was quite disheartening not only for the archers but also for the DLSU students. Please don't get me wrong I'm not from La Salle.

hey, chris! i'm among those who were last in line for the autograph signing and photo op. i'm guilty of being one of those who have kept you hostage until 2:30am. it must've been tough for you guys to just be confined to one location, and not really get to fully enjoy the ongoing festivities. i'm so sorry! but i'm very glad you chose to stay until you've met and greeted the very last person in line.

despite the rain, the mud, and the extremely long waiting line, finding you guys at the end made it all worthwhile.

Hey Chris, it's Tiffanie here again.. Yeah, it was indeed a stressful day, with the hundreds or even thousands of people around.. plus the muddy field, nevertheless, I had fun! ;)

Just to see you guys even a few meters away made my day oh-so-perfect! :) But a little sad for I wasn't able to have your autograph and picture due to the long line and muddy field. My friend can't get into the field since her slippers got broken, so we just stayed at the sides. Anyway, I believe there's always a time for that. Maybe not Sept. 30. so see you some time?! Haha! As if you know me but I'm really a fan of yours ;)

But I have to admit, I got shocked with the Bonfire thing and thought it was a foul.. with all the names and stuff, but I know you didn't want it at all either.

But no matter what, congratulations to you guys.. Hope I'd be able to meet you face to face one day :) (wink2!)

P.S. PLEASE, if you have time, at least reply even just a short message. It will really inspire me in all aspects! Advance thank you :)

More power and God bless! tc! ;)

but at least i got close to you when you were lighting the bonfire.thank GOD for that spot.actually, we stayed there because it was crowded in the other parts.my auntie said that GOD placed us in that spot.haha.

well, i'm still hoping that i'll get your autograph, i hope before college because i'm now a 1st year high school student.please try to watch all the games of the blue eagles next season so i could have your autograph and maybe a picture? :]

P.S. maybe you know my uncle, bernardo "joy" carpio because he's in the hall of fame in the ateneo.
