Going to Jakarta - FIBA Asia Champion's Cup 2009

Hi there, it's been a while since my last post, haven't found the time since i got back on tuesday. I'm writing this just after packing for our trip to Jakarta and before leaving for the airport. For those who haven't been reading the papers, we, the RP Smart Gilas team will be going to Jakarta for the FIBA Asia Champion's Cup. It's not a qualifier for any future tournament. The teams that are participating are Iran, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Qatar and the Philippines. I'm missing one country as it slips my mind right now. Again, we have been placed on a very very competitive bracket (they call it the bracket of death) since we're are in the same group as Iran (Asian games champion and former team of Coach Rajko), South Korea, Lebanon and Kuwait. Each team is allowed to field 2 imports but we are fielding in just one (CJ Giles).

This is going to be my first official international competition where I will be included in the line up and I'm quite excited. Of course, there's pressure to win since this is an international competition and we will be bearing our national flag. Even if we're not expected to win, I'm looking forward to this experience, to actually feel what it will be like playing in the Asian Games in 2011 since the national team players of these Asian countries will most likely be these same guys who will be playing in Jakarta. Based on the lineups submitted, the teams will be fielding their top national players. Iran has two former NBA players as their imports including Priest Lauderdale who stands at 7'4 and played for the Atlanta Hawks. This competition will be very very tough so I ask for your prayers that we may have a successful and meaningful trip!

We may be a very young and inexperienced team, but one thing is for sure, we will give it our best shot and we will play with the biggest hearts!

Chris

P.S. Happy Mother's Day to all the Mothers out there :)

Hi chris!

I've checked out the FIBA Asia site. You have some tough competition waiting for you there...

Some said that the Philippine team was put in the toughest bracket.

Anyways, it's alright... No matter what, you will still gain experience and the feeling of playing in an international level...

Just keep up the good work... regards to your teammates..

I cant imagine your excitement, Chris! And from the bottom of my heart, Im really glad that you get to experience these things. Not all could have these experiences. And Im also glad that you're enjoying them.

I just pray that your team, our team rather, the RP team would do well, if not, win this tournament and learn and gain more experience to prepare you for 2011 and also praying that you guys would make it to the 2012 Olympics.

Ive seen some FIBA guys maybe 4-5 years ago when I was still in Philippines, when they had the tournament there. They stayed in the same condo where my HS friends had our yearly get-together. (even if we're just in our 2nd year in college then, haha! We just missed each other I guess). They did look tough and scary with their unbelievable heights and body builts. But I know you guys can beat them anywhere, anytime if you just give your heart to the game and for the glory of our country and most of all, for the glory of God =)

As long as the team remains solid and positive then i guess there won't be a problem with any opponent. You said it yourself in one of your blogs when you managed to beat the guys with Walker.Kaya nga we have a quote that says "Goliath's size wasn't a thing to be feared because his size made him an easy target." Bite into the bright side ika nga sabi ng cloud 9.
It's like the board exams. It's the number of passers that matters, bonus lng ung spots sa top 10.Well in your case, being there and playing for the country is the real deal. The win is just the bonus.
And come on, you are good players and you guys did your training.
Just enjoy the games.

One thing though. Are they really called dog tags? The one you have in AKO MISMO coz i laughed really hard when i read someone's comment calling them dog tags hahaha

Hi, Chris!

I'm glad you have new post. I've been waiting for it. :)

So you'll be traveling again, ha. From Serbia in Europe to Las Vegas in North America and now back to Asia. Wow!!! Nakakainggit ka talaga.

It will be a tough competition but I have faith in you and the rest of the RP team.

I saw your latest ad campaign for Ako Mismo. So, mamahalin mo na mga Lasalista. That's good, loving enemies. hehehe

I think I have to miss watching your shows 'cause I have to go through an extensive review for the next 6 months. :( I have to concentrate first on that to fulfill my dream of becoming a Certified Public Accountant. I'll be taking the CPA Board Exams this October. Good thing I'm subscribe to your Fanatxt and you have this blogspot for me to still be updated with your whereabouts.

Chris, will you please pray for me to pass the board exam as soon as you approve my comment? Please!!! I know malakas ka kay God. :)

Don't you worry I'll pray for your success and safety like I always do. You have us, your fans, to support you always. Just keep safe and give your best shot.

Good luck and enjoy the trip, Chris!

Hi there, Chris. I've read Pilipinas Basketbol's facebook status message just now, and it says Mahram Iran defeats Gilas Pilipinas 98-87. There is and will always be a next time. :) Good luck on your remaining games. I'm pretty sure you'll win them all. Just don't lose the faith, hang in there. :)

Chris,

I know this comment has nothing to do with your recent post but I am just alarmed by the criticism against the AKOMISMO campaign. Below is the link to the multiply site of my friend who posted a so-called "warning" by Jaime Garchitorena,President of
Edupro (www.edupro.com.ph)

http://jeannecarmel.multiply.com/journal/item/1125/AKO_MISMO

If this is true, then I feel sorry for myself because I thought this campaign is really for advocacy. I am also alarmed as to what this could do to you, as well as the other endorsers of AKOMISMO. I would stain your credibility.

On a happy note: I like your pledge, "mas mamahalin ko ang mga lasalista". Just so you know I was your lasalista fan in this blog entry:

http://chris-tiu.blogspot.com/2009/01/when-things-get-tough-just-smile.html

Anyway, I hope you can clarify the AKOMISMO ad soon.

By the way, I am so proud of the RP Team. You may not win against all the other teams but I am sure you will be using your experience to further not only your career but also the teams that you belong to (licealiz and RP team). I would also like to congratulate Licealiz for the good turn-out this PBL season. Please update us as to when you will be playing for Licealiz again. I want to see what you are going to bring in the court after your experience in Serbia, US and Jakarta.

Thanks and more power!

Sincerely,
Erica

You lost your game with Iran but i think the team did so much better than the prvious RP teams. You even had the chance to get a few points ahaead in the first half which rarely happened in the past. I'm not being negative or anything towards the last RP teams, I just wanna emphasize how much the team has evolved for this year's Asian games. And it still is impressive, seriously.

I can't believe I'm still getting goosebumps when I remember putting your wrong name in one of my comments in your last blog entry.I feel really stupid when i call people with the wrong names.

I enjoy watching every team in fiba asia.i just couldn't understand why your organization decided to choose a underated player to play as your frontliner.they're only kids.we have so many good and talented players who played in schools and amateur league.that's only my opinion.anyway,i just love seeing J.B CASIO playing and ofcourse YOU MR. TIU.you guys can play BIG TIME.

Tonight I've witnessed a livelier Chris Tiu as Ripley's host. You're getting better & better every time.ü

I am happy to know that you've been winning your games there in Jakarta, Chris. The Lord knows how hard you guys have been working for the past weeks/months, and He just wouldn't let your efforts be put to waste. Keep it up!

You've been really quiet again lately, w/c is understandable cos of your hectic schedule. Though I wish you could update us soon.

I pray for your victory & continued success. I only wish you the best. Happy midnight from the Philippines to Jakarta!ü
