China Part 1 (Beijing)

I am really sorry for writing again just now. As most of you might already know, I was in China for 10 days. It was purely a leisure trip. I went with my Tita to visit my cousin who is currently studying in Beijing. Most of the time we were in Beijing but we also took trips to Lijian and Shangrila in the Yunnan province down south. We had to take a 4 hour plane ride to get there. I will talk more about those trips in my next entry. It was my 2nd time in Beijing and 3rd time to visit China. The first thing i noticed upon landing in the Beijing airport was the pollution. At first I wondered why it was fogging during a very sunny day in the city. Then I was told that it is actually the smog. Now i got worried how I am going to spend the next few days especially with my allergic rhinitis and asthma. Nevertheless, I had lots of fun just taking time out to unwind and visiting tourist/scenic spots! I was also able to meet up with some friends over there who took me out at night to experience the night life in a Chinese speaking land. I've decided not to pursue studying Mandarin anymore in Beijing because of my various commitments here in Manila. Anyways, i was able to practice my Mandarin a bit while talking to the taxi drivers, waiters, sales people, etc. I wasn't so bad after all. I guess the Mandarin I learned back in Xavier high school and in Ateneo really paid off. Some even thought that I was a local and couldn't believe that I was from a foreign country. The only internet access i had there was in my cousin's dorm room, which i hardly visit. That explains my blogging absence.

First stop, the Great Wall. This wall isn't great for nothing. It stretches from east to west for about 7000km. What makes this so special is the fact that this wall was built along mountain slopes rising and falling, twisting and turning in the Northern part of China. It served as an impregnable military defense for the Chinese dynasties against invaders. This wall was first built in 7th century B.C. and reconstruction continued throughout the following dynasties which lasted for almost 2000 years. What makes it even more amazing is, if you think about it, that it was built without any sophisticated machinery and equipment. There were no trucks nor cranes back in the 7th century to be used through the winding and extremely steep slopes, especially during the freezing winter. As a result, thousands of men lost their lives. Sadly, their bodies were said to be used as pavement too. My Tita and I went to the Badaling section, which is about 1 and a half hours away from the city. Anticipating the cold weather, I brought 3 layers of clothing but luckily i only had to wear 1 layer since the sun rays were very intense up in the mountains. Also, climbing up and down made me feel warm. It was really tiring but i didn't give up because i saw all these 60 to 70 year olds weaving their way through. If they can do it, we can do it too! We stayed for about 3 hours then headed back to the city.

That same night, after having the best Peking Duck at LiQun Kaoya in some alley, we strolled around Tian'anmen Square to help digest the food. Tian'anmen is located right at the center of Beijing proper and it literally means Gate of Heavenly Peace. It is the largest public square with a total floor space of 440,000 square meters, it can accommodate up to a million people. The Tian'anmen massacre also occurred in this square where possibly thousands of innocent people where killed while protesting for democratic reforms in 1989. Right across the road is the Forbidden City, the largest wooden cluster in the world today. The picture displays the gate of the empire. I did not enter its premises due to the lack of time in this trip (it will take one about 4 hours to really go around), but I have been inside before and I have to say that it is indeed a masterpiece in itself. Its construction began in 1406 during the Ming dynasty and it was completed 14 years later. 24 emperors lived and executed their supreme power over the nation from here. It is rectangular in shape and covers 72 hectares. Inside the city are 8,704 rooms and it is surrounded by 10-meter-high walls. For the emperor's security, It was said that the emperor sleeps in different rooms every night (of course with his concubines) and only his closest aides know where he will be spending the night.

That's enough for now. Keep posted for more China pics and stories :) When people hear the word China, you normally think of cheap labor, cheap goods, 1.2 billion people, etc. I hope this entry, together with the next few ones will help you appreciate the beauty and richness of China and its history :)

whoa. what can i say, another nice entry, Chris :) now i know the reason behind your blogging absence and i've realized the real beauty of China, beyond the melamine scare & all other issues that have been haunting the country. don't be surprised if the Chinese have mistaken you as a native of the country like them, you're a Chinese naman talaga e, you don't look like a Pinoy :)) also, just like any other place in this world, no wonder China has become poluted too, because of all the inhumane acts of some conscienceless people. thank you for all the infos, now i can be a tour guide :)) i have also visited China, but that was when i was still so young i can't even recall. thanks to the pics :)) it's good to know that through this trip, you've somehow been able to relax & unwind, 10 days is not bad at all :D so, have you decided yet as to what you'll be doing and what projects you'll accept or decline? haha. keep us posted! :) i am looking forward to your future entries re your China adventure. i really missed you! :D i wasn't able to watch Ripley's last Monday & Pinoy Records last Saturday because of my own share of commitments. if you could be busy, i can be too :)) but i'll make sure i'd be able watch your show tonight :) thanks, thanks, thanks, Chris for this post. we bleed for more & more! :)) you take care :)

there are a lot of misconceptions bout the great wall. first, it cannot be seen from space. that was chinese propaganda. second, the great wall isnt one wall that extends from end to end in a straight continuous line. the great wall has gaps between it and is a collection of smaller walls.

I missed reading your entries. Ay talaga namang you are just priceless:) When I think of China, I think of the four great rivers that gave way to their great civilazation, polygamy, elegantly crafted handiworks from the Ming, Shang and Qing dynasty and of course, that the food there isn't really the food you experience in Chinese restaurants here. :)

It's nice to hear from you, Chris! I'm sure all of your fans appreciate you for taking some time to share your experience in China. Actually, you don't really have to pursue studies in China just to be fluent in Mandarin. You just have to watch a lot of Chinese films. But I suggest that you watch Taiwanese series because I think it is more aligned with our culture here. However, if you want to feed your scholarly mind, you may want to try watching series made by directors from mainland China. Most of the series that they produce are historical. Though they may be fictional most of the time, the characters are historical characters. I mean the story may deviate from historical accounts, but the characters are true characters. And they also feature historical places in China. You might be interested :). Take care!

hi chris,

Anonymous said...

opinion blabber ^^ said...
although the movie offered to you and Simon Atkins may be about basketball, please DO NOT accept it. it will cheapen your image as a role model and a host. the world of showbiz is nothing different from the hell we know as politics- it is corrupted and barely will you be able to find real friends once you enter it. i have nothing against actors and actresses, without them, t.v.'s would be useless. but it is just not your "calling" to be an actor. as you've said in past interviews, you can't see yourself acting and/or singing, JUST hosting. i agree with you, Chris. you're fit into hosting and you must therefore stick to it and even improve your skills. yes, you should also continue being a model/endorser as we fondly call you a "poster boy" of the Ateneo. and it's so nice of you to endorse only "decent" products such as Nesvita and Hanford, among others. i definitely would hate to see a Chris Tiu billboard with you wearing only boxers or brief and posing seductively. haha! that sounds funny and very unlikely of you. (please don't prove me wrong) and about you entering the PBA, please DON'T. i know you have yet to decide about it but please just don't consider joining that league. there's a whole lot more in store for you than that alone. PBA is very much different from UAAP, ugh! you know what i mean. i'd love to see you wearing business suits everyday and touring around the world for business purposes, and, to see you in the cover of the Time Magazine being one of the wealthiest and most successful businessmen will give me so much delight and i would be even prouder of you than i have ever been.
these are just a few of my opinions regarding your future plans. i just wanted to let you know of these and i don't intend to intrude your privacy or get in the way of your decision making. in the end, it'd still be up to you, i could only say so much. please just be very wise in all the decisions that you will be making because, admit it or not, all eyes are on you. and when you're that popular, a single mistake of yours can be your very downfall and people will criticize you in every unimaginable way. as you know, when you're on top, people will pull you down. but i have my full trust and confidence in you, Chris. stay smart and cute. and, continue soaring the highest. we all miss you.
thank you for taking time in reading this. God bless you all the more.

I don't think of China as "cheap", actually. My friend told me it was nice in China, and after I read your blog, I'm really ecstatic now to go to China. :D BTW Chris, congratulations for your Super Senior Award and for being part of the Mythical Team at the PSA Collegiate Basketball Awards. You really are awesome! You deserve the awards. And I'm excited to see the Ateneo-San Beda game. It will be a pound-for-pound game, and both teams are equal. May the best team win! Good luck Chris.

God bless!:)

Welcome back, Chris! Got jet lags still? Haha.

This entry sure does show how intellectual you are. Full of facts! How could you have even remembered all those figures? Did you jot down notes? Haha.

I so missed reading an entry from you, and now that i just did, i feel so happy. It's also nice to know you enjoyed your trip. What a way for you to unwind from all the stress & hectic schedules you have.

So, what are your plans? Have you decided yet as to what you'll be doing? And, just like those people who have asked you already, will you be playing against San Beda this 23rd of November? Whoa. That'd be exciting-- The UAAP Champs vs. The NCAA Champs. Yay! I ask too many questions, peace yo! I have the tendency to be overly curious at times. Haha.

Take care & take some more rest & spend some more leisure time, take advantage of the chance since it's still sem break. At least we can all take a break from studying, but definitely not from our other endeavors, too bad! Haha.

Will surely read your next entries and hope to see many pics!

You need to ride a cable car to reach the top of great wall right? and as I remember our tour guide said that tian'an men was originally the main entrance to the imperial palace in ming and qing dynasties.

Welcome back chris!

Wow. So you were in China pala. that's a really good place to relax and all those.

Weird thing is lots of people here in Dumaguete thought that you are here with your team to play for the University Games. Yon pala you're in China. Anyhow, Ateneo's really doing good in there games here. They never lost a game pa so far (and i doubt if they ever will). But it could have been better to see you play rin sana. :)

nice blog, BTW. Learned a lot. Sana lang people would stop stereotyping China kasi it's a really nice country.

godspeed.

*sigh*

wish i'll have a chance to visit china and practice my (self-taught! wee!) mandarin too! you know... just to see how bad I really am. hahaha.

additional information: actually, the great wall of china is not really connected in its 7000km length. it's putol-putol in some places while it stretches for hundreds of kilometers in others. :) according to NatGeo or Discovery (not sure. hehehe), even if you walk for decades, you can never cover the whole distance of the great wall on foot. *correct me if i'm wrong. :)*

Hi Chris,

I hope all is fine with you.

There are things that we really need to consider and sacrifice for now in order for us to come up a wise/better decision. It seems you enjoyed your trip. Taking a break and at the same time thinking the next move.

Anyways, keep on posting 'coz it's really informative. :) And I guess you were able to get a copy of Jay’s latest album and David Tao’s albums. :)

Have a great night and God bless.

hi chris. Just some comments on your blog. Aren't you scared that you post personal pics which may be downloaded in hi-res? Its not that I'am against you sharing it, but making it available for download. You really don't know maybe people just visit your blog to get your pics. We all know you don't have any online community pages. Everything posers may use may come from this. Just concerned.
