ADMU vs DLSU (Round 1)

It's already 1:30 am and I'm still not sleepy despite that hard fought game! Must be the adrenaline! So i guess I'll just write my 3rd straight entry.

I think the game was definitely worth the hype! I heard one lower box ticket was going for around P6,000. Yes I also have problems searching for tickets for my family and some friends. In fact, I was still worrying and stressing about the tickets the night before the game because we players only receive 2 patron and 2 upper box A tickets EACH, which we still have to pay for. In other words, we're all on the same boat searching for desperate means to get tickets. But definitely, I won't spend P6,000 for a lower box ticket or even Patron for that matter. Haha!

But come to think of it, P6,000 might just be worth it in this particular duel! Not only was it a nerve-wrecking game, but the ticket price included a glimpse of two international superstars namely Gilbert Arenas (a.k.a. Agent Zero) and Manny Pacquiao (a.k.a. Pacman). Hmm, until now, I wonder what IS my monicker!?

Just before the game began, Agent Zero went inside our locker room to take photos with us. I was surprised that he was only about 2 or 3 inches taller than myself but his shoulders were extremely broad! Soon, our locker room was packed with photographers, media people, Adidas staff, security as well as kids who wanted to get photos and autographs of Arenas. He also gave us a very meaningful pep-talk about teamwork... "It's the individual player that sells to the people, but it's the team that wins championships..." He also spoke about Kevin Garnett and how he moved to a team which was able to support him and eventually grab a NBA title. I was actually worried after Arenas left the dugout because everyone just got so excited and might have lost focus on our game. I was excited myself because I was able to get an authentic Arenas autograph on one of my Arenas t-shirts.

Just before entering the court, i bumped into my partner Pacquiao and his sizable entourage! He wished me good luck, together with Jinkee and some others before i was pushed away by his huge body guards. Among the hundreds of "good lucks" i receive before an ADMU-DLSU game, this one just seemed like it did have a special impact to me! It was probably just a little different because it came from the world's #1 Pound for Pound boxer and someone who came out in the same TV Commercial as Kobe, Sharapova, Tiger Woods and Federer among others. So i rush out into the hard court with the usual sea of green and blue filled all the way to the bleachers. It wasn't too difficult to get warmed up!

At the start of the game, the analysts on TV mentioned that Ateneo got like 2 bonus points because of the technical foul that was given to the DLSU Coaching staff for not wearing their IDs. But guess what, those two shots were, for me, probably the most difficult free throw shots i've taken in my career so far! I felt more pressure while walking to the line to take those two shots in front of 22,000 people including Manny Pacquiao and Gilbert Arenas. The score was 0-0, time hasn't ticked, nobody else on the line. So many things were going through my head. What will Arenas think of the UAAP if i miss two wide open free throws? Or what will Pacquiao (a world class athelte) think of his co-host, some incapable guy who can't even dominate the college leagues? Sometimes i just think too much! I found myself literally shaking before those two free throws!! Thank God I was able to clear my mind right before shooting. Thank you Lord, for guiding them in! What a relief! But seriously, I think Pacquiao's presence really motivated me and pushed me to be extra aggressive today because I didn't want to disappoint Him! haha sounds cheesy? I guess that explains the 19 free throws I attempted, partly because the calls of the refs were extremely 'thin' today! Most calls made us just scratch our heads like the technical foul at the start of the game against the DLSU coaches for not wearing IDs and the one at the beginning of the 4th quarter against Coach Norman whom they thought was complaining and making hand gestures to the referees when APPARENTLY he was screaming and pointing at Ryan Buenafe who was not in proper formation. Hahaha!!

"A win is a win" as Coach Norman would put it, no matter how close. I'm proud of the rookies as well as the veterans who stepped up. It's not easy to play your first UAAP game in a DLSU-ADMU atmosphere. I remember my first DLSU ADMU game, I only stepped on the court for the last 17 seconds of the first half, in which i didn't even touch the ball. At least Coach Joel Banal still made an effort to put me in no matter how short. RYan Buenafe impressed a lot of spectators with his composure despite the pressing defense of DLSU and his ability to create his own shots. Vince Burke showed some shooting touch as well. Nico Salva showed his athleticism but I'm still waiting for the guy to have his breakout game! Nonoy, as usual, was picked on by the referees but came back much stronger in the 4th quarter. Rabeh also picked up some cheap fouls from the refs in the first few minutes but kept his cool and hit big shots down the stretch. He is slowly learning to make good decisions on the post, knowing when to shoot and when to pass out. Jobe played tough today and showed that he CAN be a bad boy which we need in the team because we're all too nice on the court. Eric, my buddy, started a big run that gave us some breathing space. And of course, my co-captain Yuri showed his defensive skills and his ability to organize the offense especially during end game situations. Great game plan by the coaching staff as well. At the end of it all, I want to thank the Lord for giving this victory to us! Still a long way to go... I just pray for fair calls this year and an injury-free roster, may the best team win!

Thanks for all your support! See you at the games!

Chris

Hi Chris! Your energy is simply amazing! It’s the wee hours of the morning already and yet you were able to produce 3 fresh blog entries after that hard fought game! Congratulations, great game earlier! We will continue praying for you, supporting and cheering you on. But at this moment, I hope you’re already getting some much needed rest. :D

Congratz Chris!

We (me and your other fans) were actually wondering about Manny's impact on your performance today and we see his presence and support really brought the best of Chris Tiu. It's also wonderful to know that you and Manny Pacquiao have the same strong belief in God and that you trust Him completely. That's very cool you know. It's so not common these days.

ANd yeah, I woke up so early, 3:50AM to be exact and next time I wont wake up early as the game started around 4:45 AM, NY is 12hrs late.

You did a good job Chris! Im so happy! The rest of ADMU's happy. Your family, friends and fans are happy. Nuff said.

Anonymous said...

Anyway, your monicker? Aren't you Tiuperman? ;-)

Gee... You actually met Gilbert Arenas?! WOW! That's just sooo cool! You and your mates must have been so thrilled! Why do UAAP players always get cool things?! Hehe... How I wish I was there live and see you get nervous when thinking about Manny looking @ you playing. Haha! I could really imagine the pressure.

Hi Chris!! I watched the game a while ago at Araneta. You're right, it's really hard to get tickets. Kaya nga GA tickets na lang nakuha namin ng friend ko.

But the game was really worth it. We enjoyed it better because Babble was there beside us. Yeah my friend Angel and I enjoy the drums and all.

Ang galing mo talaga kanina. :D The whole team was great actually.

Till the next game, Chris. We'll see you at Ultra on Thu. Good luck on your game against Adamson.

I hope we get better seats. :) haha.

about your monicker.. you can actually be called 'the adopted archer'. believe it or not, whenever dlsu-admu games are shown here in dlsu, there are still people cheering for you whenever you make shots! imagine that!

Thank you for bringing this game home for us, Chris. Hope your decision to stay one more year will prove to be worth it at the end of the season. We will be rooting for you all until we get there -- one game at a time...

Good game Chris! You guys made everyone who's watching the game go crazy! I lost my voice and my head was throbbing after the game because of too much screaming and cheering. hahaha and yes, its very difficult to get a decent ticket for an Ateneo - La Salle game. At least you don’t need to line up at 4am to get one.

I do hope that you guys can win the championship na this year. After seeing you guys train almost everyday last year, I know that the team deserves it. One big fight. : )

p.s.
You still had time to think while doing that free throw huh? Unbelievable ka talaga. hehe =p

wow!! New entries! =))=)) haha. CONGRATS!!!!!!!! Even if I was not able to watch the game, I still heard the whole game! via YM! I asked my friend to go online just so I can catch up on the game.

It was already around 8 pm here when the game started there in the Philippines but I stayed up until 11 and waited for the game to finish! I was already shaking last night because it was so cold here! haha. Just listening to it really made me so nervous! It's a good thing that my sister there recorded the whole game then she sent it to my email! Thank God you guys won! YEY ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT! GOODLUCK for the next games!

Hanggang New Zealand, you guys have a super, super fan cheering you on!

Hi Chris!..You are right about the ticket. I was able to get 3 tickets in the upper box A in their regular rate but unfortunately, we are 4 in our group! So, we have to buy from a guy that sells 1,200 for another ticket! But it's okay, it was a great and exciting game! Even though we look like spiderman glued on the metal wall of the arena[hehehe] 'coz it is too crowded. It is still worth to watch your game.

Keep it up!...
Godspeed for the Blue Eagles!

Congratulations to you, Chris, and the rest of the team for that awesome win yesterday! I was so proud of all you guys for hanging in there and keeping your eyes on the prize despite all the craziness of the celebrities who were there and the weird stuff going on in the game. (Parang grade school yung mga technical sa coaches, Coach Franz for incomplete uniform and Coach Norman for talking during class!) Thanks also for the "view from the bench" in your post! I did notice Coach Norman yelling at Ryan but couldn't make the connection between that and the technical that he got.

As for your question about what your moniker is, don't get me started :-D I'm sure your hardcore fans can come up with a bazillion of them!

Hello Chris... I'm so glad with your new posts. Anyways, Just wanted to congratulate you and your team for winning the game yesterday.. I just got my copy of Star today and i'm so happy reading the news at the sports page about the game yesterday.. Well I think yesterday will be one of the most unforgettable and memorable day of my life. WATCHING THE GAME LIVE and ATENEO WINNING THE GAME. Despite of waking up so early and immediately go to araneta and waited there for about 5 hours just to get a ticket. And you're definitely right about the overpricing of the tickets with all the scalpers there.. (scarcity of tickets huh.. hehe...) And I thought my day will end there. Lucky me, I got to see the Ateneo players after the game and of course took picture with you. Thanks for being so nice. Oh! And I became even happier when i got to take picture also with your dad.. haha.. And he was so so so kind and nice. Think that's all for today.. Wish you all the luck on the upcoming games.. Go ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT!!:)

hey Mr. Tiu! I always find time to open your blog (sneakily, bawal kasi dito hehe) to see if you have new posts and I'm so happy to see that - finally - u have new posts, and 3 new ones! i was so annoyed that i was unable to watch your game yesterday [coz i have work & yeah - priorities first] but still, i just had to know what's happening during your game. so during work punta muna ako ng pantry to see if UAAP yung palabas - sobrang asar ako kasi PBA! i thought every person that i know's looking forward to UAAP so i was expecting na UAAP ung magiging show sa pantry hay naku sobrang asar ako kasi nga PBA game. i just realized di ko nga pla kilala ung may control ng TV heheh. anyway i was following the progress of your game through web [particularly PEX]. i was so happy when i read that you guys won! ngulat lang naman mga tao sa paligid ko when i suddenly laughed after 2 hours of sulking around. from what i read you guys really did great on that game - i even saw a screencap of yuri [not really sure if it's him] stealing a ball with a kick! what's up with that? ndi ba bawal un?

anyway...bout ur new show..i hope you'll find time to host another show aside from Pinoy Records. you've improved a lot from your first hosting episode but there's still a lot of room for improvement. I do hope that my next sked will work for me so that i can watch one of your games & also your TV show.

good luck BLUE EAGLES! =)

it's funny you should say that because i'm also awake at that time last night. Probably because of the intensity of the game you had against la salle. I got really affected, a lot. Especially when you slipped on the floor, i wanted to kick his ass for not being careful. Ur too important to be injured. eniweiz, hope you beat AdU this coming thursday. I love reading your blog, because i tend to learn more on vocabulary. keep us posted! that's all.

Whenever Ateneo wins a game (especially one against La Salle), nothing can ever stop me from smiling the next day :) It is really hard to get tickets to a ADMU-DLSU game, but fortunately I was able to find one. It was so much fun cheering for Ateneo. You guys make such a great team! I really believe that you could be the champions this season :) You`re such a great role model and I really look up to you. :D

I'm speechless!

I was really happy yesterday!

You're really the best!

Earlier during our INAF GA, everyone of us was talking like crazy about the win! We're so much hyped up that we didn't even pay much attention on what the hosts/emcees were saying! :)

Anyway, I just noticed that you always get hurt in your games. It's just so sad that some people are really that desperate to win at the expense of other people. Tsk tsk tsk. :(

I'm also proud of the whole team for this season. :) Everyone's in good shape and I was so delighted that even the rookies impressed us this early. :)

I hope your last playing year would be so worth it.:)

Looking forward for more spectacular games. :)

GO ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT! :)

Chris! I don't care about our schools' rivalry anymore! haha! Grabe sobrang galing mo! I was in awe when i saw u play! Di ko mapigilan na icheer ka kahit tiga La Salle ako.

Anonymous said...

It's always good to hear nice things being said even from the opposing schools. After all, basketball is just a game and all the hatred for each other should be left on the court, cause outside of it, alot of these players are actually good friends with each other. It's just sad seeing how some supporters from both side act so unpleasantly during the games, with all their foul language and very personal criticism/taunting. I wish sometimes fans just admire the players, the teams and the game itself, and start acting politically and just cheer for your own team during the game. But what can we do, that's part of life, we can't control everything.

Anonymous said...

I disagree with you charles, I think that ateneo lasalle needs that animosity amongst its fans to make it more marketable. Without the animosity, i might as well watch a pba game, the quality of the play is better. Its the intense rivalry among schools is what sells the uaap. I think the animosity is very tame right now. ateneo lasalle was built on a very intense rivalry. During the 70s and 80s, there would be massive fights after game that would spill out to the parking lot of araneta, both by players and spectators. We should be thankful we are in the uaap coz look at the ncaa... now those are some crazy mofos right there.

Hey Chris!
Great game! I watched the game live with my family who were all wearing green except for me! The tickets nga were so hard to get. My one month stay here in Manila will be dedicated to Ateneo! I must say that even though I went to DLSU, ADMU was my first choice! I took the ACET and passed but went to DLSU instead due to my family background. Which turned out to be a not-so-good choice na! I got to see the DLSU players in campus but I would prefer to bump into you than them! Oh well! I was in DLSU for a short time lang naman! I hope you can visit or study in London too!

What a start for season 71?!

Grabe ang energy mo kahit pagod ka na sa laro, nagawa mo pang magpost ng 3 ENTRIES!! Maybe you were really happy to tell everyone that you won the game on round 1 (and i'm happy for you). Kulang na lang siguro ipagsigawan un sa buong universe..hehe..

Nakakahiya man aminin I shouted to our class that you won (and that was first time happened to me. I don't remember how it happened basta sa sobrang saya nagawa un..Its a good thing wala pa prof namin nung nagawa ko un). Later ko lang na-realize talagang nakakahiya ang ginawa ko pero hindi ko napigilan e..hehe.. Sorry..

I'm really proud you guys!

GO ATENEO! ONE BIG BIG FIGHT!!

Charles - I think the intensity of the rivalry and the game can bring out the worst in people as far as taunting and cussing goes. I know I act like a jerk sometimes at games - I'm pretty sure you've heard me at the off-season/Team B games, too :-p even if we don't know each other personally - but that's one way I show support for Ateneo, and I really can't help it if the other team gives me so much material, harharhar...but yes, I do turn it off after the game is over, and there are some things that I know not to say. You can't take any of your words back after you say them, so I just try to be funny - OK, with a dash of mean.

Chris - I don't know if your training has covered how to fall properly, but if you don't know it yet, don't forget to tuck your chin into your chest to keep from hitting your head on the floor when you go down - unfortunately, I am pretty sure those falls you took last Sunday won't be the last. The Judo team might be able to teach you more about distributing the impact of a fall, too. (Yes, I learned all of this from the judo class I took one semester for PE.)

Hi Chris! Just wanted to congratulate you, and the team as well, for putting up a great fight last Sunday. Good job! It really was a victorious battle!

When I bade you good luck last Friday, you were practicing free throws. I guess that really helped you in winning the game since you made a whole lot of them. haha. I wouldn't be able to congratulate you in person tomorrow(if ever you have training) because we have our guidance test, kaya here nlang. =D

Congratulations again!
Good luck in the succeeding games and I hope Ateneo wins!

With regards to the comments of mvp, there are so many more reasons why we watch the UAAP instead of PBA. First of all, the UAAP is about school pride, playing for your school's glory while the PBA is purely a business, trying to make money. Hence we see more game fixing and referees conspiring to help different teams, especially one team with the most fans. Hate to admit it but i don't really mind since im a fan of that team haha. (not proven, im just saying, its a common knowledge to people who watch PBA, to the trainers and even players) Apart from that, the PBA's game is so long, it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes at least, plus so many time outs. The college game is action packed all the way. You see full-court pressure all game long, while in the PBA, you can see how slow paced the games are and stuff like that.
With regards to the fans, sure they play a big reason on why the UAAP is so fun, but that's not the point. There should be limits, especially when the so called "supporters" of their schools start accusing their very own players of game-fixing. When fans criticize players very very personally that it would really hurt their dignity. Now, if people think fans fighting over a basketball game is fun and exciting, then now i know what's wrong with us people. Basketball is competition. And the first thing any coach in his right mind would teach his players is sportsmanship. To the fans, basketball is just purely entertainment. To the players, its about pride and love for the game. They throw it all out on the court, but outside of it, everything should be just normal. And all im saying is that, la-sallites and ateneans fighting over such petty things is so childish when instead of making comments degrading one another, cursing one another or fighting one another for things that have happened already, they should be cooperating with each other and spend their time doing something better that could help their society. But whatever, that's being too idealistic. We don't live in a perfect world.

hi chris! congratulations!

It was indeed a great fight! Are you ok? because I was dreaming last night that you became a hunchback and your legs were so thin and i kept finding your sandals because the sandals you're wearing was lost (it was an egyptian sandals)...

Kasi super nag-alala ako sa'yo kasi noong sunday, di ba, noong nag-attempt kang mag-3 points shoot and then an archer accidentanlly hit you.. so you drop your body on the floor and it was a bad drop since nauna yung back mo. And feeling ko super delicate yung part na yun especially yung lower back kasi nandoon yung backbone natin..

Basta, take care of yourself always ha...

I watch your game vs the Green Archers and you're so remarkable. Thanks for playing again (and I guess for the last time)in the UAAP. Thanks because your presence in the hardcourt truly makes us(your fans)truly happy. Rest assured we'll support you all the way.

Go CHRIS!

Charles,

PBA or UAAP its all subject to each person's taste so if you prefer uaap, I can’t argue with you there. With regards to the uaap, I don’t think all players only play for school pride. That’s wishful thinking. Players may not admit in publicly but some players play for bonuses for winning games/championships, some play for the women and some play to get to the next level or some play for a combination of all. One thing I’ll agree with you is that level of effort amongst players in the uaap is better than the pba because uaap players want it more. Uaap players financially have less therefore are hungrier. Another point I disagree with you that the uaap is indeed very much a business. The uaap sells the rights to broadcasting its basketball games to the highest bidder. They have sponsors for your shoes and uniform. The schools give large financial incentives to recruit the best players. When millions and millions of pesos are involved, it becomes business.

i clicked on the link to your blog thru my friend's multiply account. i'm just so amazed everytime you play basketball. i am also a BIG KOBE FAN and i even got the chance to see him during his supernatural tour for nike here in the philippines. i went to his presscon at makati shang. imagine, i was just few inches away from him. and being the big fan that i am, i took a late exam just to see him. haha! talk about being a fan of an nba superstar.

good luck on your game this sunday! i'll be cheering for ADMU, as i always do, though i'm from UP. haha! beat UE! GO CHRIS! :D

chris! i saw you getting frustrated at the game a while ago when you missed one of your 3-point shots. although you're cute when you get frustrated, don't feel any less. you're CHRIS TIU and nothing in this world can do anything about it. we believe in every shot you make and we'll support you no matter what.

it was a good game. the rookies played well. you should be proud that they're stepping because after you leave, there are these people who'll continue whatever you will start this year.

rest well! see you on sunday! :P

to charles...

im not a bball expert whatsoever but i somehow agree w what u said, charles. theres something w uaap that hooks you in to keep on watching. i started catching the games when i was in my sophie year in hs; now im in about to graduate. though i never really saw myself attending college in admu, i also never saw myself cheering for another team but the BEs. the state u might be the "best school" [im not saying it is or that it isnt---tis just a label people have given my college alma mater], but i believe what makes me enjoy watching ateneo games live is the enthusiasm of the fans. props to the babbles for their unwavering love for cheering on the team. theres this sense of belongingness and camaraderie i feel, though not part of the school, when i come to the games. it's the school spirit more than anything else for me. i know some former uaap players now in the pba. they say the same about the diff between uaap and pba. although uaap players today get their share of freebies and endorsements, bottom line for the team is still school pride and bragging rights. on the other hand, pba, it being the pro league, is the players' means of livelihood. it thus follows that money tends to be a huge factor on any dealings they make here. ...the lack of that spirit in the pro league is what stops me from watching pba live. tis really a diff feeling 'cause somehow, you know these players also win the games for the money now. it sorta ruins the idealistic nature of "love for the game" thing. ...and i also want to reiterate what youve said on the fighting about bball games. how i wish they drop the trash talking---holla NOT ONLY TO THE PLAYERS BUT THE FANS as well. im not from admu but my passion for bball goes beyond the fact i am so ticked off w how the people around me wont stop cursing and giving unnecessary comments. yeah, i get it. bad call from the ref, but do they think theyre any better than those referees w the kind of language they use to get those people's attention? heck no! you cant say tis part of the game---'cause they call warnings on those too! i dont know if these people [im not just speaking for admu alumni but for every sports fanatic out there] realize they drag their school's name w the kind of behavior they display. im a big fanatic myself---watching games even when i have exams and prods---BUT I KNOW TIS JUST A GAME. kind of idealistic for me to hope but what the heck, right? :)

i do not think animosity is what we need either. rivalry between schools is fine in bball, but lets leave it at the game.

not everything is about making money anyway.

psixteen said...

love the new jerseys, btw...as well as jai's ateneo jacket. :) and btw, are those bball sneaks lucky or something for you? uve been wearing them for the past three games ive seen---nsl finals and the two uaap s71 games.

hi mr. tiu. 'twas a superb game...I was there too but I had to join my cuzins cheering for lasalle.I was really mum since I know im with the people in green. But the last 5 mins of the game really made me nervous and started saying a simple prayer "Lord, give this one to ATENEO."And indeed God answered my prayer.

Well, it was not for La Salle but I guess we have to admit that JV was really good that time and La Salle's defense still worked to your disadvantage. But, Ateneo made it through.Whew, good thing for me coz it was my first UAAP experience, and it was memorable.

I would want to agree to your analysis regarding the calls of the refs, it was such a mystery. But never the less, we all have to move on every after call the ref gave.

Bravo to Nonoy Baclao, he was there to help the defense of ateneo but I hope in the coming games he'll be able to show off his offensive side (he used to be known for being the go-to-guy of his team in our small ligas in Bacolod).

Good Luck to your next game and hopefully your project with GMA7 will push through. Please say my regards to NONOy Baclao.

God Bless

CHARLES and MVP:

maybe i'm too late to comment to your comments (haha!) but to tell you honestly, what's a game if there is no cheering and jeering from the crowds? but really, there is no point in saying HARSH words and in acting so RUDE against both teams. Charles is right. (sorry for calling you on your first name. er, seems like i have no respect on older people. hohoho!) back to the topic, as i've said, charles was right. what you do on court whenever there's a game, you MUST leave it there, right? hmmm. and so, i guess, we must stop making fuss about it.

CHRIS:

i'm supposed to call you "kuya", kaso baka, ER, dating sayo, ER, tipong, ER, feeling close. hahaha! auin. eto lang. hanep blog mo ah! congrats. there are lots of comments and my eyeballs are about to pop out off its socket in reading. hahaha! by the way, i noticed that on your recent post, hindi ka na nagre-reply sa mga comment nung iba. hehe! wala, napansin ko lang. aun sige. comment ako ng comment. BUAHA! goodnoght na lang. or should i say, good morning? hehe! GOOD MORNIGHT na lang para cute. pray ke, haneh? GOD bless.
