ADMU vs ADU (Round 1)

After being eliminated by Adamson in the Fil-Oil Preseason tournament, we finally redeemed ourselves. With their new head coach Leo Austria (my teammate Bacon's father), Adamson has improved drastically despite their very young line-up. They have mastered their half-court execution and have tightened up their defense as well. With this in mind, we made sure that we will not take this team for granted. I believe that we were able to execute Coach Norman's game plan both on the offensive and defensive end. I wish i can talk about it but the season is still far from over and we will still be meeting them in the 2nd round so i'll have to save it 'til then. Overall, we had a rusty start caused by a number of turnovers and missed shots (very make-able shots at that). They stayed close because of their defense and 2nd chance points. But towards the end our shots started falling and our defense held up. We played a lot of 2-3 zone in the 2nd half and they weren't able to adjust partly because of their lack of consistent outside shooters, except for Gonzalgo.

I personally didn't like my game because i missed a lot of easy outside shots and i wasn't able to create enough for my teammates. I ended the first half with 2 points and two missed free throws as well! I was really disappointed at half time but i continued to stay positive and aggressive. Luckily, shots started falling in the 2nd half. Thankfully, the other guys stepped up today. Jai was steady organizing the offense with limited turnovers (maybe none). Eric and Ryan helped in the scoring. But more importantly, they drove and created for the big guys. Jobe was also a force underneath grabbing 12 rebounds. I love his baseline turnaround jumper. Nonoy as usual was very steady on the defensive end, blocking and changing shots. He also showed his ability to score on the offensive end. Surprisingly Nonoy was not in foul trouble this time around. It was Galinato from Adamson who got 2 extremely early fouls that forced him to the bench - I'm not so sure about the 2nd cheap touch foul though but i'll take it. Thanks Nabro! Nico Salva had his breakout game today with 3 of his favorite up and under stabs.

Before the game, the referees gave Jobe a warning to play honest clean defense as a result of his scuffle with Maeirhoffer in the previous game. (Maeirhoffer was given a warning too) Today Jobe was slapped with an intentional foul and after watching the replay again and again in slow motion, there was really nothing. Jobe also confided to me "hindi ko siya tinira". That call was merely an anticipated call. Referees often have that tendency to anticipate a call because it is already imprinted in their consciousness. I personally believe that it is unfair to call a flagrant foul on a player just because he is reputed to be a "bad boy" when in fact a clean foul was given. They should just call it as they see it with no biases!

I want to thank the Lord for the victory today, which I think made my mom's birthday really special! Of course we capped it off with a nice family dinner at this Japanese restaurant called Kikufuji at Pasong Tamo. Anyway, sunday is only two days away and it's important for us to stay fresh especially against a pressing UE team. This will be a good test of our character. I'm sure UE will want to get back at us after beating them in the NSL Championship.

I hope to see Rabeh smiling after that game :)

Oh, and I'd like to thank the Ateneo Sports Shooters for the photos @ www.fabilioh.com

Congratz again! Personally, Im feeling bad for Jobe because of the reasons you've mentioned. I know he will prove them wrong.

Im kinda excited about your Coach Black's game plan! Im really hoping it will go well the whole season =) As much as I want to hear about it, Im pretty sure it's good that you cant talk coz it's like a secret. Is it really a secret?

I love basketball but there are things like rules and stuff that I dont know. What are those 2-3 zones that you're saying? And what is that DLSU press? I read in a basketball forum that Norman Black should find a solution to "dreaded" (that's the exact word Ive read) DLSU press. Can you share your thoughts about it? Please? :D I really wanna learn more about basketball stuff so that I wont just stare @ the monitor with my mouth gaping coz I couldnt understand why you're all running around and whatnot.

PS: I tried googling about it and found none. You're like my last resort! Hehe... =)

Enjoyed reading the game from your point of view, Chris. Definitely agree with you on the call against Jobe. I was one of those protesting against that call earlier.
Try not to dwell too much on the rusty start, it happens. Whats more important is that you guys were able to shake it off and finish strong.
Its really very exciting to watch the team play this year. Lots of maturity, surprises and talent.
Happy Birthday to your mom, too!!!

well.. it's always been a problem in basketball about those referees.. they make the game not so enticing especially when they're making unnecessary fouls.. tsk.. you just have to bear with them more often than not because arguing with them would only get you to a bigger trouble.. that's part of it and every good player like you always deal with them.. but anyway, congrats for another victory.. hehe..

hey chris! Great job winning your 2nd game yesterday. Although I do think things were sort of messy during the 1st half. I admit I'm not familiar with the rules of the sport but it looked like people were all over the place and missing shots from both ends. Thank God you guys got your act together at he 2nd half 'coz I was wondering how the final score turned out to be that way [wasn't able to watch live 'coz fo class] when AdU was only behind you 7pts around 3rd qtr. On the bright side, we got to see the skills of our rookies. Hands down to Buenafe and Salva! Hope this winning streak continues! Good luck on Sunday!

Congrats Chris! But I think the team still needs a lot of improvement. Other than you, no other player can be considered as a threat for its outside shooting. There were so many open 3pt shots missed :( As others put it, stop Chris Tiu and you're already halfway in defeating Ateneo. Anyway, I applaud your leadership in court and how you keep your cool. GO ATENEO! Please make our last year memorable. :D

hey another win!

First let me congratulate you and your team.Indeed Ateneo basketball and Norman Black never fail to surprise us basketball fans.

You beat lasalle and now Adamson. But I hope Ateneo will keep on improving especially the defensive side of the team.Your next game will be UE and I am still trying to get one ticket for that game.Anyway, we all know that UE is nothing but TOUGHNESS and BALL team.I hope Ateneo this time would be at its best condition to play since I know UE will be tougher to you guys since u beat them last NSL.

I wish you all the best and hopefully this one works.I know that Chris TIU wearing jersey number 17 will continue to improve every game of this UAAP season. Continue not just as a tough defender and good shooter and leader but as a really TOUGhER and better shooter/leader to your team.Just beware of the UE defense because for sure it will be concentrated to you.

Godspeed!

u did look v. disappointed about your performance during the first half, but it doesnt matter as it gave the rest of the team a chance to step up and take some of the burden of creating plays and taking shots. twas funny though how u smiled after finally getting a shot in after missing a couple.

ateneo games are always fun to watch esp w the enthusiasm of the babbles. i just have one ish---will the unnecessary comments from the alumni and other bball supporters ever stop? because honestly, it is painful to be seated amongst them. [but for my love of admu/uaap, i try to get the best seats always even if it entails being surrounded by people like that. tough love as im not even an atenean! gaah. ;p]

hey chris,

Since you brought up the subject of refereeing. What do you think of the current state of referees in the uaap? Do you think theyre fair, clean, competent? It's funny coz I was reading this article that narvasa suspendeds the 3 referees that worked the admu dlsu game because they lost control of the game. I am wondering, there were at least 60 fts attempted by both teams combined. That's an incredible number of fts. If fouls arent enough to control the game, should we start ejecting players? I think the referees were either idiots or narvasa needs a scapegoat for a fairly controversial game.

On your frustration bout referees jumping the gun and anticipating calls, I think thats human nature and will never change. It's like rasheed wallace getting t'd up everytime he complains. he has a reputation and gets a short leesh. My advice is try to control things you can control, like fair play. If jobe plays clean for a long amount of time, the league wont be looking at him under a microscope.

congrats chris!:) 2nd win for the team! go for the 3rd this coming sunday against UE! I want to thank you for letting my friend have a shot with you btw. And it was really nice talking to your dad too! he's cool, accomodating and approachable. Goodluck to you and the rest of the tea this coming sunday! God bless.:)

chris said...

hey MVP, i love your insights and questions. Regarding the officiating against DLSU, my personal opinion is that it was unnecessary to suspend that one or those three referees (I heard only one was suspended - Jimenez?). Because if those officiating lapses are going to be the basis of suspensions for referees, then we SHOULD be having suspended referees after every game! For me, if they are to suspend referees, they should do it consistently after reviewing every game and not just in a DLSU ADMU game when all critics are watching, because i've experienced much worse officiated games. I have too many thoughts and encounters on this subject and if you wish, you can send me an e-mail personally and we can discuss this because i don't think i can talk about it in the open just yet.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you chris. If they have to suspend the referees they have to be consistent with giving such sanctions all throughout the season at the least. They should be critical not only during the admu-dlsu games just because these games are the most "celebrated". Poor officiating doesn't happen only during these games. And with mvp's comment regarding jobe, I also agree, I also think that that's the least you guys can do.

Good job on your last game...

Great game against Adamson. Continue to fight for the crown. Bring back the pride! :)

Regarding the two free throw before your game against DLSU started, was it legal? I read an article that because of Coach Franz Pumaren not wearing his id, you were given two free throws before the game. Who's decision was it to give you the free throws?? Wasn't it unfair for the DLSU side especially when the UST (during the opening ceremony) violated the same rule?

I bought the July issue of Chalk Magazine. You look great in the cover.

Continue to shine inside and outside the court. Good Luck for tomorrow's game. God Bless!

Advance happy birthday!

Helene said...

to mvp and mr tiu,

hey we've seen how tough the refs were during the admu-lasalle game and yeah they made some unnecessary calls for both teams.I've seen just recently the dlsu-feu game which also had some lapses with the officiating refs.but compared to admu-lasalle calls, the "unnecessary" calls were lesser.I think, they've learned their lessons already and hopefully, in the coming games, they'd be better.

I don't want to be one-sided on this issue since I've heard some relatives from la salle saying that the refs were with the ateneo side while some friends told that they were with la salle. For me, 'twas still the efforts of both team that made a difference. For ateneo, the fts that they shot made them win and for la salle, poor offensive execution killed them plus their ft shooting was terrible.

Every day we are challenged by the people around us to improve and get better. No one is exempted from this. The refs, game officials, coaches, players and even fans face this reality not just in the field of sports but also in our private lives. So hopefully, the next uaap game will not be as unfair as it was during the ateneo-la salle game.

i keep my fingers crossed.

I got to catch part of the DLSU-FEU game but can anybody help me out here. I'm wondering why there was an intentional foul and another technical foul called against FEU in the last 3 minutes? That really swung the momentum of the game. JV Casio's stats were really impressive though.

Regarding our DLSU-ADMU game, I think the calls were very 'thin' both ways and that was reflected with the number of free throws taken by both teams. They were pretty consistent in calling fouls both ways I should say.

Anonymous said...

i wasn't able to watch the game due to my work schedule..tsk tsk...if you look at the scores, it seemed to be a very easy win for Ateneo. Hope this thing continues. Good luck on your game against UE. This time, I will watch.

Helene said...

chris,

I saw the unsportsmanship foul called against feu during the last 3 minutes which also made me wonder what would be the basis of the call. Before the call, there was already a tension with the guards of both teams. I did not see though the actual intentional foul done by barocca to jv casio. The technical foul though was called against the bench of the tams for unsolicited comments during the game. Now, the refs are really sensitive.

With JV, he's simply a gunner and go getter. La Salle would really rely its future JV's game.Another outstanding performance would be barua(?) and their rookie revilla. Let's not take for granted Rico who actually gained some confidence during the last quarter of the game and started attacking the defense of FEU. He had a double double. But just the same, fts of La Salle were not as good as it should be.

Let's all expect a better feu in the days to come and a tougher La Salle team.As for Ateneo, I wish you luck and better execution of Coach Norman's instructions. (Just a side thought: I always think that playing under Coach Norman is such a unique privilege, is it?)

Anonymous said...

hi chris..nice game again.. honestly, i really felt sad during the 1st half. i can see from your face that you're disappointed about your missed shots and i was worried that it will held you down. but you stepped up in the 3rd and 4th quarter and i was really happy about it..

..gudluck in your game against UE..play tough defense on them..xD

PS..
anyway, i'm really having a hard time to find tickets for your game against UP next sat. i've called ULTRA and they told me that they do not have the tickets. also, they said that the participating schools have the tickets. i called one school and they said they dont have it yet(or they still dont release it)..so, can you suggest where can i get tickets?? thanks alot..

Anonymous said...

The T I think was against the FEU coach, but the intentional foul on Barroca was more of a phantom foul. Actually, in the first game (UP vs UST) there were a lot weird calls by NABRO.

Good luck on your game versus UE. OBF!!!!

Anonymous said...

hey chris! congrats. 2-0 na. i hope you'll win today against 3-0. may i ask? injury ba ung sa shoulders mo during the admu-adu game?

galing mo na maghost sa pinoy records. you've improved a lot! :)

belated happy birthday to your mom and advance happy birthday to you! lapit na magTIUsday. :D

Anonymous said...

oh, the whistle happy nabros.
feu collapsed in the end game, poor execution of plays, coach glenn capacio was so frustrated he asked for a technical foul.

Ang bad trip ng mga referees ngayon. Parang ilang tuloy ang mga players dumepensa, kasi konting hand check lang, may tawag kagad. Tsk. They should do something about that. Nakakairita kasi puro nalang FT's ginagawa. Pag may nakakalayo, they'll try to make it closer. Dami din nilang bawi calls. The unsportsmanlike conduct technical on Capacio was the icing on the cake. Ni hindi nga nagrereklamo si Coach Glenn eh.

hi char! i'll try my best to explain the SIXTH MAN means. i'm no babble so if ever i miss something, i'm sorry. here it goes...

there are ideally FIVE players who can play inside the court at any point in the game. we, the supporters, are the SIXTH MAN. we make our presence felt inside the court through cheering until the end of the game.

say chris, do you have any friends (or at least know somebody) from babble? i mean, basketball players and cheering squads do hang out together, right? what do you think of them? hope to get an naswer from you... :P

mvp,

did u catch the admu-ue game this aft? i think the refs made bad calls against ateneo this time too. twas a one-sided thing for a coupla minutes. i remember that around five years ago, uaap just borrowed refs from other leagues...then came tonsa issues about their calls that the uaap board decided to have their own set to train. im still no expert [or anything close to that even], but this aft's game reminds me of one particular game i caught live in ultra as well in 2004. luckily, the team that was at the receiving end of the bad calls still won...much like what happened w admu earlier. dont u think the board should call their attention as well?

props to ue though. twas a tough match. they played hard. i really thought ateneo was going to lose with the amazing shooting ability the warriors exhibited today.
