My Personal Wishes & Goals for 2011

Thanks for all your very supportive and inspiring comments!

As promised, here are my personal wishes for 2011.

1) For Smart Gilas national team- that we may regain lost basketball glory for our country! I strongly believe we can do it no matter what people say. With the right frame of mind, training, exposure, discipline, skill, it can be done if God wills it. But more than just proving Filipinos wrong, the reason why i want Gilas to succeed so bad is really to unite the Filipino people and inspire them - that despite the odds, we can succeed in life if we possess the right habits and values! Just like how Manny Pacquiao, the Azkals and other sports heroes have done.

2) For Philippine sports - that all sports stakeholders may put aside all personal ambition and glory for the greater glory of the country. It's close to impossible to eradicate totally the politics in sports, but at least start somewhere towards creating programs for the development of our current and future national coaches and athletes. Sports is a legal battleground where we can lift our national flags with pride after defeating our opponents.

3) Philippine economy - I wish that the economy will continue to flourish and that the stock market will keep moving upwards, although experts predict it won't be as hot as 2010.

4) The Philippines - I pray we be spared of major calamities this year. And that the Filipino people will do what is right, and not do something just because everyone is doing it.

5) I wish for good health for myself, my family and close friends.

6) I want to meet Jay Chou & Steve Nash! hehehe

Next, let me jot down my personal goals for this year. I believe it is truly helpful to ones self-improvement if one makes a conscious effort to set concrete goals to enable him/her to work towards it. It doesn't matter if its a long-term goal, mid-term or short-term goal. I'll put mine down randomly. I would advise you to do the same.

1) I will dedicate most of my time to basketball , for my personal improvement and that of the team. (as if i haven't devoted my entire life to the team) I will improve my shooting percentage and be more aggressive. One last hurrah! This could be my last year of competitive basketball.

2) Open at least 3 more Happy Lemon branches

3) I will take a more active role in promulgating my advocacies, such as education and entrepreneurship among others. It is one thing to raise awareness through shows, press releases, etc, but i want to have a deeper engagement as well. This will happen towards the end of the year, after the FIBA Asia Championship in September.

4) In everything I do, i will try my best to set a good example, especially to the kids. I know i have a mission/apostolate to bring people closer to God through my various platforms . But in doing so, i myself must become closer to God. I have my own shortcomings, but I'm constantly trying to improve. I will spend more time in prayer, receiving the sacraments, conversing w/ my spiritual director & doing simple good deeds.

To end, here's a nice reflection i picked up from Bishop Tagle in his Jan. 1 homily in Tagaytay Highlands that I'd like to share. In lieu of the Feast of the Solemnity of our Lady as the Mother of God, Mary was full of grace as she accepted to embrace the responsibility of bearing the child Jesus and bringing Him into humankind. We normally ask God for grace or blessing. We thank Him profusely whenever we receive gifts, money, projects, etc. referring to these as 'blessings'! But these things are fleeting or short-lived. The true essence of the word 'blessing' is about you & me being a blessing to other people - this means that we should be Christ-like. Now here's my challenge to you, HOW can I be a blessing to other people?

Have a great day, folks!

Chris

chris,

there are many ways to be a blessing to others, i think the best way is to:have an ear to listen, again listen.. this is one of the four macro-skills that we usually neglect.. and for your goals this 2010, i think it belongs to one category:to give God the greatest glory..Soli Deo Gloria..God bless..!

very well said Chris!well, honestly i have reflected somehow in 2010..and because of your write ups, i realized i only have ideas but not concrete plans of what i want to achieve and what i where i want to be at this year..thanks for reminding your readers!haha!

i hope all your personal plans will materialize especially in basketball because you and the rest of the team will make a lot of Pinoys happy and proud!

and lastly, yeah i agree with you and Bishop Tagle, being thankful of whatever "blessings" we received in life, it will be more meaningful if we'll be able to share it and be a "blessing" to others as well..

*when i saw the trailer of Jay Chou's movie while waiting for my fave Harry Potter 7, i can't help but smile as i remembered you..i can't help but think,"hmm..chris tiu will definitely watch his idol's Hollywood movie!" haha!

happy 2011!^_^

Hi Chris, what wonderful reflections! It's so nice to know that you also have a spiritual director. I try to see mine once a week no matter how busy I am (I know he is busier than I). There's something I can't really explain why it is so important to me. Hope you will be able to find more time for it no matter what sacrifices you will have to undergo to do it. God is more generous and so if you find more time for Him... JR

This blog is particularly moving Chris, especially the last paragraph. Truly, all the goods in this world are fleeting that is why we have to put our priority to what matter most.

You do not fail to inspire many young people. I pray everyday that you live up to this mission that God has given you.

Let's see if you could guess who I am :)

I love your tag line: For God's greater glory! That's nice. Indeed we're all called to do the same. I also had written my goals for 2011. To God be the glory!

I wish you the best and good luck. You're way ahead of our generation. That's what great men have lived their lives - the likes of Jose Rizal and Gandhi. You've proven to be a man of principle, of hard-work, of faith. Keep on pointing the right way for us your supporters. You're always in our prayers.

To become a blessing, consider yourself as a puzzle piece of this jigsaw world.. Without you, the picture wont be complete. Simply said, take responsibility not only for yourself, buy for others as well. Selfless love to the highest!!!!!

I hope your wishes for this year will come true!!!!! God speed!!!

thanks for the inspiring blog. There may be a lot more who share your perspectives in life and missions in life, but very few can be a living convergence of so many ideals. That is you, Chris Tiu. :) Hope we can meet someday. And hope we can invite you in one of our seminars on entrepreneurship for the youth. Hope we can converse someday.

Hi Chris,

I do hope everything is working out for you and you're getting closer everyday in fulfilling your 2011 goals. I really look up to you not just because of your achievements in academics or basketball but also because of your humility and kindness. You really have a good heart and I wish people could be more like you. That's why I hope you can also blog about some advices on how to approach life and become the best person that we can be just like what you did.

You're an inspiration Chris and I wish you all the best!

I simply saw a replay of Gilas games at Dubai Invitational today on gma news tv. First time I saw the team play and I instantly fell in love with the team. Maybe it was the patriotic instinct in me which is innate in every Filipino. Wanting to find out about this national team, I stumbled upon your blog. Then before I know it, I was already speed-reading a year worth of your blog entries. (I was reading Chris Tiu's blog, his thoughts. And he wasnt just an ordinary Ateneo alumnus, but the Blue Eagles' team captain!) I ignored my heart's pulsating, which still bleeds green after all, and kept reading. Today, you have inspired me. You aspire to be what God wants His children to be: Christ-like. At this age and time, it's very rare to find someone so young and inspiring. You provoke confidence in others. You exalt God and exalt other people too. You extend yourself to other people, because you love. You're a positive force, Chris. And I believe you will stretch yourself to do His will. :) God bless you.
