Lee Wei Ling's Thoughts on the current crisis

Here is an article written by Lee Wei Ling, daughter of Singapore leader Lee Kuan Yew, in the Sunday Times in Singapore. Some beautiful insights about the economic crisis and giving it a different perspective. I totally agree with her sentiments.

In 2007, in an end-of-year message to the staff of the National Neuroscience
Institute, I wrote: 'Whilst boom time in the public sector is never as
booming as in the private sector, let us not forget that boom time is
eventually followed by slump time. Slump time in the public sector is always
less painful compared to the private sector.'

Slump time has arrived with a bang.

While I worry about the poorer Singaporeans who will be hit hard, perhaps
this recession has come at an opportune time for many of us. It will give us
an incentive to reconsider our priorities in life.

Decades of the good life have made us soft. The wealthy especially, but also
the middle class in Singapore, have had it so good for so long, what they
once considered luxuries, they now think of as necessities.

A mobile phone, for instance, is now a statement about who you are, not just
a piece of equipment for communication. Hence many people buy the latest
model though their existing mobile phones are still in perfect working
order.

A Mercedes-Benz is no longer adequate as a status symbol. For millionaires
who wish to show the world they have taste, a Ferrari or a Porsche is deemed
more appropriate. The same attitude influences the choice of attire and accessories. I still
find it hard to believe that there are people carrying handbags that cost
more than thrice the monthly income of a bus driver, and many more times
that of the foreign worker labouring in the hot sun, risking his life to
construct luxury condominiums he will never have a chance to live in.
The media encourages and amplifies this ostentatious consumption. Perhaps it
is good to encourage people to spend more because this will prevent the
recession from getting worse. I am not an economist, but wasn't that the
root cause of the current crisis - Americans spending more than they could
afford to?

I am not a particularly spiritual person. I don't believe in the
supernatural and I don't think I have a soul that will survive my death. But
as I view the crass materialism around me, I am reminded of what my mother
once told me: 'Suffering and deprivation is good for the soul.'

My family is not poor, but we have been brought up to be frugal. My parents
and I live in the same house that my paternal grandparents and their
children moved into after World War II in 1945. It is a big house by today's
standards, but it is simple - in fact, almost to the point of being shabby.
Those who see it for the first time are astonished that Minister Mentor Lee
Kuan Yew's home is so humble. But it is a comfortable house, a home we have
got used to. Though it does look shabby compared to the new mansions on our
street, we are not bothered by the comparison.

Most of the world and much of Singapore will lament the economic downturn.
We have been told to tighten our belts. There will undoubtedly be suffering,
which we must try our best to ameliorate.

But I personally think the hard times will hold a timely lesson for many
Singaporeans, especially those born after 1970 who have never lived through
difficult times.
No matter how poor you are in Singapore , the authorities and social groups
do try to ensure you have shelter and food. Nobody starves in Singapore .
Many of those who are currently living in mansions and enjoying a luxurious
lifestyle will probably still be able to do so, even if they might have to
downgrade from wines costing $20,000 a bottle to $10,000 a bottle. They
would hardly notice the difference.
Being wealthy is not a sin. It cannot be in a capitalist market economy.
Enjoying the fruits of one's own labour is one's prerogative and I have no
right to chastise those who choose to live luxuriously.
But if one is blinded by materialism, there would be no end to wanting and
hankering. After the Ferrari, what next? An Aston Martin? After the Hermes
Birkin handbag, what can one upgrade to?

Neither an Aston Martin nor an Hermes Birkin can make us truly happy or
contented. They are like dust, a fog obscuring the true meaning of life, and
can be blown away in the twinkling of an eye.
When the end approaches and we look back on our lives, will we regret the
latest mobile phone or luxury car that we did not acquire? Or would we
prefer to die at peace with ourselves, knowing that we have lived lives
filled with love, friendship and goodwill, that we have helped some of our
fellow voyagers along the way and that we have tried our best to leave this
world a slightly better place than how we found it?
We know which is the correct choice - and it is within our power to make
that choice.

In this new year, burdened as it is with the problems of the year that has
just ended, let us again try to choose wisely.
To a considerable degree, our happiness is within our own control, and we
should not follow the herd blindly.

Her message reflects my family's view about wants and needs. My family's not poor but not that rich either but we're taught to live within our means and save and spend our extra money to missions.

She's a smart person to be able to come up with that without experiencing poverty. If she could only see the poverty most Filipinos are experiencing, I wonder what she would say about that? (The millions who live in the squatters area for example.)

Philippines is a third world country but still we could see the biggest malls and the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. And the corrupt government officials, well, getting more corrupt.

it's a bitter truth out there,,sometimes, somethings are better said than done...i couldn't agree more on what she said because it is all true,,i think it's going to be for a while; this recession we're having...the worst effect will be on the poor society,,if everybody would just give a damn and unite together surely we all can survive this. But we just keep pulling each other down because of jealousy, vain, hatred, and some other senseless reasons...Nowadays, this is what we can call: survival of the fittest. If you're smart, of course you'll think of a way to get around this and you'll find a way. But if you're too emotional and you panic all the time, good luck to you.

hey Chris!just wanna thank you for sharing this inspirational message with regards to the economic crisis that we have been experiencing today. I admit though at first I wasn't that interested to read your post since I really do not know any leaders especially to that of Singapore. :D
Nevertheless, I still thought of giving it a try so there. Like you, I totally agree with her too. I also think that this situation that we are going through is a wake-up call for us.
People should get to read this entry. Thanks again and God bless!

it's very obvious. hehe well, filipino nurses abroad(particularly in America) aren't much that affected with these problems. oh, even in the UK too. that's proven! through my "own little" surveys and interviews, according to some studies, and from the tv news too. obama really opened a wider opportunities for them this 2009. talking bout discrimination? it's not an issue anymore. especially in chicago. :)
there was this news when a hospital somewhere in L.A. had a total shut down of computers and machines but guess what? filipinos were the key! because we are used to practice in a manual manner for our hospitals are not that "hi-tech", filipinos there were really of a big help. there, they ruled america! haha they've found that pinoys really got much skills! not just for that kind of incident, but in over-all actual performance! so they prefer filipino nurses to work for them. and most pinoy nurses are in high positions. hehe.(would you believe that the private nurse of tom cruise and katie holmes is a pinay? and the private nurse of a royal family in UK is a pinay too? believe it or not! hehe basta dami pa... philippine pride!) walang recession2x sa kanila. :)

but of course, all of us are affected talaga. dami na ngang na-SAD dahil sa stock market... :( mas malaki na demands ngayon. diskarte nlang talaga. it's in how you invest your money wisely. pati mga pre-need companies now, lugi na rin. tsk tsk super crisis!

have a nice day!

P.S. na-stress ako ha. haha!

in these dire times, it's so reassuring that there are young, circumspect people who advocate simplicity in the midst of greed and materialism. each time a big-time investment scam unfolds in the news, one can't help but think how all this is indicative of the get-rich-quick culture so prevalent now with only the acquisition of even more material goods and a luxurious lifestyle as its end.

thanks for sharing such an enlightening article.

Hi, chris...

For me, I agree with Lee Wei Ling's statement regarding the financial crisis happened in our country and also, for the whole world which is TRUE. Here, most of the employees in the private and public sector losses their jobs, others they reduced the number of employees particularly in CALABARZON area. According to news, most of the companies shut down due to losses, transferred operations to another province; with the move, the company has the opportunity to replace all regular workers with contractuals. (www.gmanews.tv, 01-27-2009)
How sad this because all of them must experienced global financial crisis which I also affected. I praying all of them that they will resolved this big problem and needs economic recession in the country. Believe in yourself and stay positive so that they survived all challenges and consequences encountered in our daily lives.

One of the important factors in life that they will not forget: FAITH, DEDICATION to career, family, friends, friends and also, PRAYER.

It's a really nice entry and it will relate to all of them.

Take care and GOD BLESS always :)

Hi Chris! It's been quite a while since I last submitted a comment but I do visit your blog site everyday... I admire her thinking that way. She was brought up right, truly an inspiration.:)

It's also nice to know that you're concerned enough to address this issue. It's very obvious that there is a global crisis going on. Big companies moving out of the country, small businesses closing down, people who are out of jobs, more beggars on the streets, crime rates going up...It's just sad. I think that it is not the creation of wealth that is wrong, but the love of money for its own sake. I hope we'll learn to appreciate what we have and (as the song goes) let's try to make the world a better place.

This might be out of topic, but I just wanna make a shout out to whoever wins the grand lotto thing, I hope you spend the money wisely! Give something to charity, return the favor, share your blessings. Hehe!;p

I'd like to add that i think a person doesn't need to have a degree to know the basics and its just unfortunate and pathetic to those who have wasted so much (money or even lives) to learn it.
What's happening now is the fruit of materialism. Why did it took so long for us to believe that the best things in life are free??
:-)

Have a great day, Mr. Chris Tiu and more power!

Erine said...

Yep, everything she said was right... In times like nowadays, it was'nt really necessary to have luxuries... There are a lot of things more important than a Gucci BAg.. Jimmy Choos.. and lots of freaking expensive things that only the rich people can afford..

Ang saklap na nga ng naging resulta ng recession tapos may makikita ka pang mga tao na parang in the face na sinasabi sa yo na " my status is greater than yours..."

Frankly, I can say na di talaga pwedeng yumaman ang karamihan sa pinoy, yumayabang kasi tayo.. Once we have that glorious money that a lot of pinoys would like to have for an instant, we'd be buying a lot of expensive things.. Ang bilis namauubos, wala pang pinatunguhang maganda..

Lee wei ling is not really experiencing poverty but she have the heart to hear and feel what majority of asians were having today.. Such a good heart..
She'll be blessed, sana ganyan din ang politicians dito sa'tin..

Your post was so inspiring, I just hope that a lot of your blog readers would be motivated to live a simpler but happy lifestyle.. Continue posting about life's realities, madami kaming natutunan sa yo.. Godbless...

( Ang galing nung Ripleys nung nakaraang lunes.. San a ikaw na lang lagi ang voice over, hehe!!)

Abc789 said...

Wow.. one word that probably encapsulates my opinion on her piece. I've always thought that the trully rich try to live unostentatiously as possible, but to hear this coming from the daughter of the person I look up to and idolize, I am nothing short of humbled.

It reminds me to revisit my priorities in life. Oo nga naman, para ano ba tayo nabubuhay sa mundo ? For me, it's very simple. It's to help lessen the load of another, to make even just 1 person's life better.

Last week, when I thought that my heart would stop beating, I knew the good that I had to do.

Hi Kuya Chris!

I think most Filipinos are used to poverty. Not that I'm saying we do not strive hard enough for improvement of our living, but we are capable of adapting to the situation. Fortunately, we can still survive despite the economic crisis that the entire globe is experiencing.

I think everyone has a vital role in coping with the situation. Frugality is one of the important philosophies everyone should live by everyday.

Mr. Tiu

Oh well I just love to show off my fruits of my labor. That's it. But after reading the article you posted, it made my existence worthless.

Yup! The world is at the center of financial crisis and here am I bragging my signatured clothes, bags or whatsoever. Many people especially children are in pain because of poverty. And here am I again, spending a lot of money like a one-day-millionaire.

I'm degrading my self. Yeah! But, I deserve it more than anyone else for being so narrow-minded. I enjoy luxuries of my life without thinking that there are a lot people dying because of hunger.

I know the only answer to solve this problem is PRAYER. That's the only thing that I can do. Because, I believe in HIM.

Thanks for sharing the article. It's an eye opener! Do you mind if I share my insight about the very alarming finacial crisis? :)

yah.. yung iba maraming malalaking bahay tapos yung iba wala talaga... sa street lang natutulog...

tapos yung iba sobra2x ang pagkain samantalang yung iba, wala talaga...

tapos yung iba ipinapakita sa tv yung mga collections ng mamahaling bags, shoes, dresses, cars and etc. tapos yung iba wala talaga tapos kung meron man sira2x pa..

yun iba sinasabi na "kasi, tamad sila.."

i think, di naman sila tamad kundi mahirap lang talaga bumangon.. like, kung isa kang basurero, pano ka aasenso nyan? yun mga basurero, as in super nagtatrabaho sila ng buong araw, tapos ang init2x pa at pwede pa silang magkaka-headache nyan.. kasi di na safe yung init ngayon, nakaka-cause na ng skin cancer..

hay... i hope the rich people will provide them jobs..

Chris, your text message just a while ago through the Fan-a-Text is a bit garbled at the end. I don't really know why, maybe just a network problem. But you said you're injured? What kind of injury is it? I hope you get well soon so you'll be 100% when you play for and practice with the National Team. Also, good decision of not playing in the PBA and not doing acting. Again, get well soon, Chris. And good luck with your stint in the National Team. I bet you won't regret that you took the advice of many of us. Take care of yourself!ü

Hi Chris! How are you? I'm really sorry to hear that you're injured. :( I hope it's nothing serious.

btw, I tried replying to your updates yesterday but I think only the first one got through because when I tried sending again, 4627 would send an error message like there was an invalid keyword or something. Oh well, I'll just call the service provider and I hope it'll not be included in my bill. Hehe!:)

And will you be attending the Adidas House Party @ Embassy later? Hope to hear from you soon! Take care!;p

hi chris! sorry but my comment is not about your blog :P

Chris, i just saw your newest Milo TVC :) one word, amazing! :D nice concept of again involving kids, since Milo is mostly for them :D you were like their Kuya, teaching them the value of discipline, hard work and of not giving up, and of course of patronizing Milo :)) ang galing talaga, keep it up! :) i hope to be able to watch your TVC more often in the coming days, since i've only seen it once pa lang :)) and oh, you're missed badly. keep us posted more often, please :) one last thing, take extra care of yourself, please. i heard you're injured. i hope it's nothing really serious. get well soon! :D you are always in my every prayer :)

Meron lang po sana akong question regarding the Blue Eagles, si Mr. Jai Reyes na po ba yung papalit sayo bilang team captain ng Blue Eagles? I hope I heard something from you po! Sana madefend ng Blue Eagles and championship this upcoming season! :) Good luck po sa career and God bless! :)

Good day!
Hopefully the message that Ms. Lee Wei Ling wanted to impart to each of your blog readers really strike and give good insights about our attitude towards spending money for some worthless reason just to portray the/our status quo.

Perhaps drinking coffee would be much appreciated by people like me if they sipped at home rather than at Starbucks? Haha

have a great day ahead!

..hi!

hey chris tiu!i think what your writing in your blog is very inspiring for many and it did for me in a way...i think being aware this days is the new fashion especially with this recession...
Anyhow, i think your great and intelligent but not in an academic kind of way, even though it is a known fact that your really smart,
(oh im talking too much)...
I'm a fan(but not in a stalker kind of way) not because your beautiful and famous but i'm a fan because i always love your dedication for this country. Not many people could be as selfless as that...
(this is getting dramatic...hahaha)

by the way, your hosting is getting less awkward now not unlike the first episodes on Ripley's so kudos.Just some slight problems in the pronunciation of words especially the tagalog ones...

Keep it up man!

Chris, aren't they done editing your Milo TVC yet? the voice over is still not your voice. quite disappointing. but it's fine though.

Hi Chris,I really love reading your blogs. Esp. this one. I always visit your blog site when I surf the net. Your blogs are so interesting. Anyways, I also agree with this article. Apparently,we are really facing a great economic crisis right now. And unfortunately,we Filipinos are greatly affected by the said recession. Pity on those poor people who will suffer more. Good for you, you are concern about the situation. Well, let`s just hope and pray for the better.

I hope you don`t mind if I copy the article. I want to make a blog also.

Take Care Always and God Bless!

hi chris,

I'm looking forward for your new entry...

By the way, Your dialogues on your new Milo ad was very personal. I remember reading that on one of your blog entries. Those words were so encouraging especially for kids. They will all look up on you as their role model..and you deserve it.

I just noticed something...
The voice over on the commercial doesn't seem to be your own voice..am I right??? I guess it would be more rewarding if it's your voice...:)

God bless!
