A Blue Night Out (June 21, 2008)

After an exhausting week of twice a day training sessions, my teammates and i finally got the chance to see each other not on the hardcourt wearing practice jerseys and rubber shoes but elsewhere wearing jeans and dress shirts. We scrimmaged from 1 to 4 that afternoon then we headed straight to the NBC Tent in the Fort for the launch of TEAM ATENEO - a fundraiser event for the 3 Ateneo basketball teams namely the Eaglets, Lady Eagles and Eagles. Proceeds would be allocated for scholarship fund and other expenses of the athletes. Despite the heavy rains, present were the very generous alumni who purchased tickets that were sold at 3,500php each that included buffet dinner, a comedy presentation and live band performance all by Ateneans. Of course, the players from all 3 teams were presented on stage with Mel Garrido and Gabe Mercado as the hosts of the event. The turnout was pretty successful with a good mix of politicians, businessmen, sports icons, executives and families. It was also real touching to see the 2002 Champion team present (Rich Alvarez, Rico Villanueva, LA Tenorio, Larry Fonacier, JC Intal, etc.). In fact, they even gave words of encouragement for us current Blue Eagles. Whether they were forced or not to purchase the P3,500 tickets, it was great to see them all there! Thank you Tita Debbie Tan for putting this all together and congratulations for a very successful event! Of course, SMART was our major sponsor :)

But the night didn't end there, of course we had to celebrate our NSL Championship! and where else but in the closest and hottest club nearby - EMBASSY! I have to say that clubbing is not exactly my preferred way of socializing, but once in a while will do! And what better excuse to give than using the 'team bonding' line. Besides, the boys deserve a treat after going through tough battles in the NSL. Thanks to Tim Yap and Bingo Manahan (both apparently graduated from the green side), we were given VIP stamps to roam around the jam-packed lounges. Since I was the eldest or one of the eldest, I had to stay behind by the reception area and make sure that all 30+ (Team A and B) players get to enter smoothly. Imagine almost all male 6 footers and above walking in, we stuck out like a sore thumb! Good thing we had a couple of beautiful girls with us too so it didn't seem like a sausage fest! When i finally went up the stairs and entered the lounge, i saw all of them just sitting down chatting without any drinks. Unfortunately, as the only captain present (Nonoy and Yuri had other engagements) I didn't want to disappoint the boys so i got them two bottles of Vodka with mixers of course just to get them going. I know it was gonna make my wallet much lighter afterwards but thanks to the smallest guy on the team, we halved the bill into 2. Jai will probably be next year's captain as it will be his last as well. We waited for the R&B Wing to open because they said guests can only enter by 1. When it finally did, we were all separated into small groups and I lost track of each one. I haven't spoken to them since but i hope that everyone will have their own stories to tell come practice tomorrow - pleasant stories at that! I, myself sat by the sofa in the wing with the House music chatting with our new Physical Therapist, Andre, who apparently sat along the Archer bench last UAAP season as their therapist. By 2 am, we decided to leave the boys and let them party on their own. My stomach started grumbling so I grabbed a bite at McDonalds with my good friends Sam and Cons before heading home. It's been a while since I've gone home past 12.

Yey! Another post from you Chris! 2 words: Thank you!

Do you know that we are always waiting for your next post?

Not just because you're our idol but because your posts are very cool and written well and there's depth to them even if mostly they're about basketball and your team.

It's nice to know that inspite of the pressures, practices, and school stuff, you and your team get to have fun once in awhile.

Anyway, I haven't said it before, but Im really glad that you created this blog because it satisfies our curiosity and feed our hunger for more Chris Tiu.

Just in case you don't know it yet, we have always been wondering for more things about you and reading your blog gives us some insights and a lil look in your life.

We have different reasons why we admire you. For me, it's not because you're cute or rich but because of your intelligence, esp in Math, and for your wisdom in regards with money, like investing them properly. I hope you could inspire us more and give us tips of how to handle money wisely =)
(Im desperate! LOL! I always spend my savings for unnecessary things!)

PS: Have you read the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad?

haha thanks for being generous again by sharing some of your stories. your blogs sure allow us to have a glimpse of your life.

It's interesting though that you thanked all the saints in your previous blog.

Mind if I ask, do you have a favorite saint? haha i hope i didnt ask a silly question =)

Good luck ulit sa games! Take care!

My favorite Saints are St. John the Beloved because he's my patron saint - Christopher JOHN. And obviously St. Ignatius of Loyola - who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

Nica, I haven't read Rich Dad, Poor Dad. But one of the books I'm reading now is entitled "Why We Want You to be Rich" by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki as well. :) It gives interesting insights from the two reputable businessmen about the shrinking middle class and basic financial advice :)

Oh cool! My aunt has a lot of books by Donald Trump! She attends his seminars stuff here in NY and in NJ. I think, she semi-"idolize" Trump. I'll check out her shelf if she has that book, next time I hit her place.

I havent read the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad too but my aunt has been telling me to read that. And the way she says it, it's like something really important. It's like, a-must read book. All I know is that it is something about success and other business stuff. SO I dunno. Thanx for replying Chris.

I'll pray for your team this UAAP season and for the success of your business.

wow! a night out huh... i thought you don't have any time for that. well, i guess maybe it's also good to have some fun for a while din to balance work, school, and social life.
by the way, saan ba kayo madalas tumambay or mag celebrate ng team afetr a game or after winning a game? :)
are there any chances na mag taping ulit kayo outside studio sa Pinoy Records? kasi parang hindi na tulad ng dati na nandun ka sa mga actual challenges or featured stories...
can't wait for 71st UAAP season... hope your team would do well. good luck! :)

Hey, I was at that fundraiser last Saturday. I had no idea you were there, too! Just kidding :-p I have to admit my inner miser is still cringing over the ticket price - I'm supposed to be saving up for graduate school - but I know my money is going to a *very* good cause and ultimately everyone who attended got a lot of bang for their buck :)

I also heard (from mutual friends - I'm not a stalker! :-p) that the team went to Embassy after the fundraiser. It was really good of you to make sure everything went smoothly for your teammates (of course you would!) and I'm sure they have lots of stories and happy memories of that night. I hope you had a lot of fun, too!

(I hope my comment doesn't appear twice, I had some browser issues posting this the first time)

I'm a 3rd year college student who would like to enter the world of business. Right now, my friends and I are conducting a feasibility study on the marketability and profitability of our personally made perfumes and scents. We haven't yet decided what brand name we would use.

Ahmm.. Could you give us some tips on creating a brand name that would click to the masses?

I hope you and your team can visit Ateneo de Davao University. I wish that you will have a "SHOWDOWN" with the Blue Knights here in Davao.

Can the Blue Eagles do that for their fellow Ateneans???

I was wondering are you planning to be a CFA(Chartered Financial Analyst)??

Chris, you must be really happy for your co-host Manny Pacquiao!

You'd be glad by this news:

Boston Celtics players went straight to Manny Pacquiao's room right after the Filipino boxing champ claimed his fourth world title in his fight with Mexican-American David Diaz in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Celtics, led by NBA champ Kevin Garnett, posed with Pacquiao for a photo shoot. Radio dzBB said Pacman got very excited in seeing Garnett, who is the boxer's favorite player. Pacquiao and Garnett expressed admiration to each other.

Boston Celtics cagers watched the bout at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday (Philippine time). Pacquiao knocked out Diaz in the ninth round.

Celtics players reportedly reserved 16 tickets to watch and support Pacquiao in his fight.

Filipino personalities also watched the bout, among them were former Ilocos Sur governor Luis "Chavit" Singson and his cousin Vincent "Bongbong" Crisologo, and Lito Atienza.

Black Eyed Peas' Allan Pineda known as apl. d. ap also saw the match. - GMANews.TV
